Just Can't Say Enough

How to you explain something that has had such a powerful effect on your life? McKenna reminds us that there are many kinds of "rich" and to look for the riches already in your life. It caused me to acknowledge that my life, both the rich and the not so rich aspects, were a reflection of the "wealth" I'd created. I'd been ignoring the evidence that I was a powerful manifestor! Now I'm aware and grateful everyday of what I've already created and that I'm capable of creating much more.

Do the worksheets in this book. As I did one of them, I was shocked at how much "@#%&" I STILL had about money! Old childhood programming was lurking in my subconscious - I had no idea it was even there. Listen to the CD that's included with the book. It's an opportunity to make real changes. As another reviewer wrote, the CD alone is worth the price of the book (but you've got to use it).

Brilliant

I have read 100's of very poor books on the Success Principles, Self Esteem, Laws of Attraction, Planning, Time Management, Wealth creation etc, in the last few years. I started reading books about goal setting, mind control and success principles in 1985. I have used what I learnt from my extensive reading, coupled with academic qualifications, business and psychology experience, to create a consulting company, teaching seminars to corporations in strategic thinking, leadership, marketing, goal setting and business development. I also use the principles to help individuals, by guiding them as a Peak Performance Coach, teaching people cognitive methods to help goal set and enhance their lives beyond what they could do on their own. As such, I read as many books as I can, on a variety of subjects to enhance my knowledge.

This is the first book I have read by Mr McKenna and must admit I have always tried to avoid his books, given his TV persona. Before reading this book, I had estimated McKenna as a bit of a rip off merchant, riding on the backs of Richard Bandler and John Grinder. I bought this book, as I had read so much on the subjects McKenna writes about, without reading McKenna, as I felt I should be a bit more open minded and read his ideas.

There is no doubt that many of the ideas in the book are based upon Bandlers work. In the first half of the book, I found very few new principles. What I did like were the application of the principles for Wealth Generation. McKenna has taken NLP principles and used them to create a wealth conciousness in the reader. Brilliant and simple and easy to understand. The smug pomposity that McKenna exudes on TV does not come across in the book. I was impressed.

The second half of the book gives you ideas of how to create wealth. Again there are some clever ideas.

So the book is split in 2 halves, 1st half creating the mind set using NLP techniques, 2nd half looking at ways of creating wealth.

The book is very well written with lots of drawings, making the application of the principles very easy to understand. The CD that comes with the book contains NLP suggestions and is not a gimic, as I thought before buying the book.

I therefore recommend this book without any reservations at all. I have bought all the other books that McKenna has written to see if they are as good.

This is the second book I have read by Paul. He has a refreshing style of writing and shares some very good ideas. I will be getting this book as gifts this year for nieces and nephews as well as friends who may be considering opening a business.

There is a fully illustrated account of the use of the sound spectrograph in acoustic analysis and chapters dealing with the acoustic features of English sounds and with the way we recognise speech sounds by the acoustic cues inherent in a particular language. Professor Fry gave courses on the physics of speech to students of applied as well as theoretical linguistics and to speech therapists, and his clear account will therefore provide a basic textbook for such courses as well as being of interest to people working in departments of speech and in communications generally.

I recommend this book.

Although this is meant for young teens, I found Gilman's philosophy sprinkled throughout the book. It's really too bad this is no longer being printed. I think this would be an excellent book to read with your child and discuss. So many ideas to bat around. Very positive read. Very unusual fantasy novel.

This is a very good book by Gilman. It ties in to "The Tightrope Walker" which was actually written first. This one should, however, be read first. I highly recommend both books for people who like to suspend disbelief when reading. Entertaining reading.

A rich adventure for youth

This is an intelligent, exciting, message-full adventure in the style of the Chronicles of Narnia, A Wrinkle in Time etc. and the like. The lessons are a bit heavily stated, from an adult perspective, but not syrupy. I got this book because I'm a great fan of Gillman's Tightrope Walker (in which this book is mentioned), Incident at Badamya, and Caravan--great adult thought-provokers.

About the Author
Mother Frances Alice Monica Forbes, also known as F.A. Forbes, was born in 1869 into a Presbyterian family. She converted to Catholicism in 1900, and entered the Society of the Sacred Heart as a postulant when she was thirty-one. She was a strong-willed and intelligent woman, and used both these gifts to generously make the sacrifices that the Lord wished of her daily. F.A. Forbes authored a considerable amount of books based on the saints, including St. John Bosco: Friend of Youth, St. Monica, St. Catherine of Sienna, St. Benedict, and The Gripfast Series of English Readers. She died in 1936.

a marvelous short read

Having just really appreciated the story of Saints Monica and Augustine, this was an excellent short read on the mother/son story of two of heavens greatest saints. This delicate little book will make you appreciate and ponder on her inspiration.

This paperback tells of the infinite faith of Saint Monica and her unceasing cries and prayers to heaven for the redemption of the body and soul of her son, Augustine, whose youth was being spent in paganistic ways, much like his father, Patricius. But just as her prayers were in earnest for her son, likewise were they for her husband, who eventually became a Christian, being affected by the love, patience and purity of his wife's life and example.

Monica's being also became a profound influence on her mother-in-law, who made Monica's life miserable, along with Patricius. But in her elder years, she began to take notice of her spiritual daughter-in-law, who always showed her the utmost respect, despite the reproaches thrown against her.

And of course, the most touching and profound story of conversion due to a mother's plea, is that of Saint Augustine. Inspiring Woman for All Women, Men and Children

I loved this book! Such an inspiring woman. She is the patron saint of mothers, wives and for lost children. ( Lost as in religiously lost ) I wish I had found her years sooner! If you have wayward children, troubled marriage or just need a good role model then read this book.

In One Nation Under Stress, Dana Becker argues that our national infatuation with the therapeutic culture has created a middle-class moral imperative to manage the tensions of daily life by turning inward, ignoring the social and political realities that underlie those tensions. Becker shows that although stress is often associated with conditions over which people have little control-workplace policies unfavorable to family life, increasing economic inequality, war in the age of terrorism-the stress concept focuses most of our attention on how individuals react to stress. A proliferation of self-help books and dire medical warnings about the negative effects of stress on our physical and emotional health all place the responsibility for alleviating stress-though yoga, deep breathing, better diet, etc.-squarely on the individual. The stress concept has come of age in a period of tectonic social and political shifts. Nevertheless, we persist in the all-American belief that we can meet these changes by re-engineering ourselves rather than tackling the root causes of stress.

Examining both research and popular representations of stress in cultural terms, Becker traces the evolution of the social uses of the stress concept as it has been transformed into an all-purpose vehicle for defining, expressing, and containing middle-class anxieties about upheavals in American society.

Blaming the victim (4.5 stars)

This very thoughtful book shows how the notion of "stress" serves to mask social and institutional problems in the US, by focusing attention on the health and behavior of those who are having trouble "coping." The author (DB) doesn't deny that people feel stress, but raises the question of whether it's always a problem with you, or often a problem with the system you're stuck in. Health care professionals and the media especially invoke stress in ways that distract us from the roots of both income and gender inequality; this rhetoric not only harms the poor and women, but working men, too. DB takes doctors, journalists and other professionals to task for branding poverty-stricken people as "less resilient," and counseling those who are stressed out by work and family to practice yoga, relax in scented baths or take pharmaceuticals -- it would be more constructive if such experts urged for social programs to help the poor or for changes in workplace policies, instead. She provides an interesting history of the politics of reifying post-traumatic stress disorder, which also seems to have some association with class. While more than 2.5 million cases of PTSD were expected in the New York area after 9/11, in fact only about 1/4 as many people sought counseling; but those earning under $25,000 were 8 times more likely to be among them as those earning $100,000 or more. On a lighter note, John Gray's Mars and Venus narratives also get a well-deserved shredding.

One of DB's preferred methods is critical analysis of the metaphors, narratives and other rhetorical tropes used to discuss stress in both the popular media and professional journals. This is very similar to something called "critical discourse analysis," but minus the pretension and jargon usually found in that genre. DB`s treatment is very clear and down-to-earth, and rooted in reality. Her direct discussion of academic social science papers (which often lack those concrete qualities) is usually left to the endnotes.

DB's perspective seems to be more from social work or clinical psychology, rather than from economics or politics. While she doesn't ignore the connections to those fields, she doesn't explore them in depth. E.g., whether there might be any connection between the rise of "stress" in the popular consciousness since the 1980s, and the country's concurrent shift to the pro-business and anti-labor policies of the Reagan era, is outside the scope of this book. I wished, though, that when she referred to "middle class," "upper class," etc., she had given the reader some guidance about how to calibrate these distinctions. It also would have been nice to see more synthesis in the form of some concrete proposals for policy change, at both the corporate and governmental levels. The half-star I deducted probably has less to do with those omissions, though, than with the accident of timing that I read this book right after reading Thomas Piketty's blockbuster, "Capital in the 21st Century," which is a tough act for any social science book to follow, especially if it touches on inequality.

A word about production: the endnotes are very poorly formatted. There are lots of them per page, with the numbering starting over for each chapter, but no guides to tell you which pages of text correspond to the page of notes you open to. Moreover, the book lacks a bibliography. So when you're looking up, say, note 136 in Chapter 5 you first have to flip around to make sure you're in the neck of the woods for Chapter 5's notes, and then, when you reach your prize, "Connell, 378," you've got to scan backwards through the notes to find what Connell is involved. (In this case, you're lucky, since the reference is in the same chapter, and a mere 68 notes earlier.) I could only surmise that the editors at Oxford University Press don't make it a habit actually to read the sorts of books they publish. But that is a small gripe about a rather interesting and well-written book.

Beautiful prose version of Dante's extraordinary poem

I feel so enthusiastic about this book that I want to tell everybody about it. This translation is unrhymed; it is in prose; and it follow's Dante's syntax and meaning closely. If you know a little Italian, you can use the text (it is a bilingual edition) as a crib to read Dante in the original, which is a tremendously moving experience. Dante's Hell is full of striking characters who still feel the passions they experienced during their life in history; only now their identity is even more sharply defined because they are living in eternity. The narrator travelling through Hell, guided by Virgil, is filled with fear, pity and anguish. Dante's writing is extraordinarily beautiful and supple.

great translation, great notes

The Durling-Martinez edition is the one used in my college Dante class. Together with their translation of Purgatorio (their edition of Paradiso apparently still in progress), the two works have great endnotes for every canto of the poem, good appendices and Purgatorio has a series of 'intercantica' notes which refer the reader to all the parallels between the two works, so you don't have to remember that the Gates of Hell and the Gates of Purgatory are found in Canto 9 of their respective works.

I wrote this review because the top reviews for this edition were all in fact for other editions, and this one definitely deserves its due. It may be more expensive than Mandelbaum's paperback, but its worth it. The print is larger, the language clearer, the notes more useful. Try it out.

A Beautiful Translation and Informative Endnotes

Dante's _Inferno_ is truly one of the most fascinating and riveting epic poems of all time. This edition of the _Inferno_, translated by Durling Martinez, is wonderful, jam-packed with all sorts of extras that lend itself to study and careful examination. The Italian verse and English prose translation mirror each other on each page and Martinez's translation is extremely user-friendly, allowing the reader to get caught up in the emotion of Dante's powerful masterpiece without trying to observe the strict meter requirements of the original.

In addition to the Italian text, Martinez provides copious amounts of end notes to each Canto. The only shame is that they are presented as end notes and not as footnotes, forcing the reader to thumb back and forth frequently while reading. Many of them are so interesting and helpful that it would have been useful to be able to access them with more ease. That being said, however, once you see the size and length of the end notes, you will understand while they have been given their own section.

On top of all of the end notes, providing the historical and literary context for all of Dante's allusions, this edition also include illustrations, including one showing the organization of Hell, and sixteen short essays that focus on various aspects of the _Inferno_. At over 650 pages long, this edition is a serious one and is best used for serious study rather than a book to shove in your pocket for pleasure reading. But if you desire to delve into the _Inferno_, this edition is fantastic for its amount of scholarship and user-friendliness. I highly recommend this edition for any fan of Dante and anyone approaching the _Inferno_ for the first time.

Crochet at its Best!

This book is informative, colorful and gives the crocheter the tools to make these beautiful afghans! The motifs can also be used to create your own! Totally love the examples, the color schemes and also examples of other colors! There are also yarns that you can use which is helpful! A beautiful, feast for the eyes and will definitely be a great addition to a crafters library! Congrats Amanda on your first published book! Hope to see one on shawls/scarfs and more soon!

The Best Crochet Afghan Pattern Book I've Ever Seen

Beautiful book! Amanda Perkins has wonderful patterns and this book is above and beyond what I expected. The patterns are easy to follow, include charts as well, and the whole book is filled with color and yarn ideas for each afghan. I'm finding it hard to pick what pattern to start with. I highly recommend this book!!

This book is fantastic..

This book is fantastic....as is all of Amanda's work. Amanda's colour sense is brilliant, as well as infectious. As a result, her work focuses on the use of colour rather than lots of complicated stitches and techniques...this book is no exception. Each pattern contains no more than 3 motifs, so even a beginner can start with a blanket containing a single motif. In addition each pattern gives three potential colourways for ideas; the possibilities are endless.
