About the Author
Alice Artzt, whom Guitar international Magazine has called "America's best player", made her solo concert debut in London in 1969. Since then critics in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas have unanimously acclaimed her performances as a soloist, in concertos with orchestra, and in chamber music groups. She studied guitar with Julian Bream, Ida Presti and Alexandre Lagoya, and composition with Darius Milhaud at Aspen Colorado, and at Columbia University where she earned a degree in musicology. In addition to her concert performances, Alice Artzt also appeared frequently on TV and radio, and has been on the juries of many international guitar competitions (CAG, GFA, Toronto, Segovia NYU, Rodrigo, and Alessandria). She has made 13 solo records (LP or CD), and has written two books on guitar technique (The Art of Practising and Rhythmic Mastery), as well as many articles on music in various magazines. She has taught for the past 45 years in private lessons and in master classes all over the world. (Several of her instructional videos are on YouTube.) This is a great book to have at home or on the road ...

This is a great book to have at home or on the road (since it weighs less than 3 OZ!) The volume of useful information concentrated in this 25 page book could easily fill 100 pages, and the value of the information is priceless. The book explains what the art of practicing means, describes the optimal sitting, left and right hand positions and potential problems to avoid, and provides advice on how to invent exercises for right and left hands that address your own specific technical problems. The author also provides several hundreds of exercises that would benefit players at any level. After playing those exercises my right hand became well balanced and technically proficient.

All guitarists SHOULD work through this book

This book has been nothing short of life-altering for me. Years ago, I tried to understand how virtuoso guitarists are able to play without mistakes, with smoothness, ease, flow and seemingly minimal finger movement and then, I found this book! My world was really turned upside down. I abandoned my quite extensive repertoire, (at that time), and focused on the exercises in the book. The first two months was not easy. That pinky kept jumping up! Then when I eventually got it right, I wanted more and more.

After many months of playing nothing but the exercises in the book, I started dabbling in the pieces again. The results were astonishing! It felt as if I was not even doing the playing. It was as if my fingers were walking through the pieces by themselves! (I know that sounds exaggerated, but it REALLY was my experience). I did not have to exert the same effort as before, and I was getting more music, more beauty and more everything than I had ever gotten out of the guitar. My guitarist friends were amazed. When I played anything, it became standard behaviour for them to get up to look at my hands from all possible angles, to see what I was doing. I wanted all of them to do the exercises in the book!

If there is a “magic formula” for reaching concert level guitar playing, I believe this book teaches it. I have returned to the exercises in this book and to the guitar after many years of absence. I have given myself a time line, and then I will record an album. I believe in this book that much! I am eternally thankful to The Force which led me to finding it when I did.

I agree with all the comments posted by previous reviewers. I am a beginning-intermediate classical guitarist and find the book extremely valuable. It provides needed exercises for improving one's basic skills, and thoughtful discussion on the rationale and benefits for each exercise. I highly recommend it for anyone studying classical guitar and striving to improve their technique.

excellent read

I opened this book a few hours ago and haven't put it down since. It contains a rich history of men's fashion staples, from the deck shoe to the biker jacket. Every bit is informative-not just in a sartorial sense, but culturally how the clothing became what it is today. For example, the M-1951 jacket came in olive green and not the typical olive drab, since it was produced post-WW2 and the higher-ups believed that the surplus of olive-drab military color being worn by laborers was devalued. In the following decades, the jacket was worn by the Mod community who embraced the cheap, military surplus jacket to protect their sharp suits as they rode their scooters through the elements.

An iconic book

This book is a very nice summary of the different parts of all the iconic styles, with a chapter for each major part. It lacks a bit in the accessory department, especially in the watch department. The ratio between text and pictures is just perfect, with a nice balance between details and overview. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to now a bit more about the different parts of men's style.

Interesting but not inspiring

I guess I should have read more reviews on this one. I bought it on a whim because Gregory Peck was on the cover and I expected a bunch of cool characters with photos and commentary on what made them style icons. Instead it's a series of fairly obvious and not so fascinating chapters on e.g. the white t-shirt; Ray Bans; the Trench Coat; the Blazer, etc.
Ok if you are studying this stuff in school but not really much more. Some nice photos though

When the niece realizes what is happening she tries to help her Uncle out by counseling him on ethics and by using any means necessary to avert the Gypsies’ nefarious plans. Along the way she also plays matchmaker for the guys, and with the help of another Scout she even learns to drive a car, which ultimately brings everyone together in a comedy unlike any you have read.

The story is attractive both for its originality and its humorous look into what for many is a part of everyday life. Whether it’s a little girl embarrassing you on a date, telling you that you play far too many video games and should really read classic literature instead, or helping you when troubled with gangsters, Girl Scouts is a very light-hearted easy to read tale, and its humor is easily enjoyed by all.

Quick read but challenging, funny

This story had me literally laughing out loud at points. The book is quick to read, but not dumbed down. There were some sections that I found overly worded, but not so much that they distracted from the story. I definitely recommend the book.

This book is horrible and hilarious all at the same time. While reading it sounded like a thesaurus threw up in it but that added to the humor... I am currently a Girl Scout leader in the middle of cookie season, this had my side's hurting at times.

About the Author

His fields of interest include electromagnetic theory, engineering-oriented relativistic electrodynamics, free-electron lasers, and bioelectromagnetics. He is an IEEE Fellow.

Blake's thoughts on human nature greatly anticipate and parallel the thinking of the psychoanalyst Carl Jung. In Jung's own words: "Blake a tantalizing study, since he compiled a lot of half or undigested knowledge in his fantasies. According to my ideas they are an artistic production rather than an authentic representation of unconscious processes." Similarly, although less popularly, Diana Hume George claimed that Blake can be seen as a precursor to the ideas of Sigmund Freud.

William Blake (1757-1827) was a nonconformist who associated with some of the leading radical thinkers of his day, such as Thomas Paine and Mary Wollstonecraft. A skilled engraver and illustrator, his illustrated poetry collections resembled the illuminated books of the Middle Ages.

A Rare Find and Wonderful Discovery

Never having read any of William Blake's works, I was entranced by this intriguing edition of his satirical fantasy. I was drawn into the story, not only by the text but by the evocative and inspired illustrations and overall rendering of this unfinished piece. Gavin O'Keefe, an illustrator whose work I admire greatly and am familiar with, adds a new dimension to a strange and wonderful text. The overall presentation, decoration and editing makes An Island in the Moon a pleasurable journey into Blake's imaginary world. Well worth the price and a tastefully done small press publication.
