About the Author
Chouette Publishing first published Caillou books in 1990, and the character went on to become the well-loved hero of the popular television series. They are located in Montreal, Quebec. Eric Sévigny is a graphic artist and the illustrator of numerous Caillou titles, such as Caillou: Every Drop Counts, Caillou: Happy Holidays, and Caillou Puts Away His Toys. He lives in Montreal, Quebec.

Great Preschool Book

This is a nice book, hardcover and durable. It is a good buy versus purchasing the individual stories at $4 each. As mentioned in other reviews there are 6 titles in this compilation; Birthday Party, Favorite T-Shirt, Picnic, Market, Beach, and Amusement Park. My son enjoys the colorful illustrations of Caillou. I think Chouette Publishers does a nice job because the pictures in the book look just like they do on TV. In some other versions of Caillou books I have seen Caillou and his family do not look like they do on TV. I recommend this book for preschoolers!

Good bang for you buck with great stories

This book has about five or six collections of stories and I love all of them but one. And that one is just a bit boring, but still pretty good. My son loves these books like crazy. I read them to him like four or five times a day and he never tires of them. The illustrations are bright and beautiful, and the writing is so sweet and soothing to adults, too! I like all of Caillou stuff including the books and the PBS cartoon. Their messages are good and Caillou learns something new each time (I even learn about new stuff- like how people make maple syrup toffee!) This book is definitely a plus.

Just what the toddler ordered!

My wife got a copy of the Caillou catalog at BEA this year, our toddler has destroyed the catalog flipping through it pointing out Caillou and all of the TV show characters. As yet he doesn't have the attention span for the stories but the pictures and characters are familiar and there has been more than one morning that he was sitting in the floor looking through the book when it's time to get up!

I had the opportunity to review Information Development Using Mike2.0 (Motion Publishing, 2013) by Andreas Rindler, Robert Hillard, Sean McClowry and Sven Mueller.

MIKE2.0, which stands for Method for an Integrated Knowledge Environment, is an open source methodology for Enterprise Information Management that provides a framework for information development including Business Intelligence, Enterprise Data Management, Enterprise Content Management, Information Asset Management, Enterprise Search, Information Management Strategy, Information Governance and Information Architecture.

The MIKE2.0 Methodology was initially created by a team from BearingPoint. All content on MIKE2.0 is made freely available as open source under the Creative Commons Attribution License. All the content is available at [...]

The book consists of key content from Mike2.0 and is arranged in a consumable manner. It includes an overall implementation guide, Mike2.0 solutions, the SAFE (STRATEGIC ARCHITECTURE for the Federated Enterprise) architecture, deliverable templates, popular blog posts and references. Given my own specialty, I appreciated the focus on Information Governance and Big Data.

The book is a definite must read for Information Management professionals who are looking to establish a data management competency within their organizations. A great book on Mike2.0 and information development

This book's value should be evaluated in conjunction with MIKE2.0 methodology (Method for an Integrated Knowledge Development). Even though there is a variety of information management methodologies established on the market, MIKE2.0 is special in a number of aspects. The methodology is available in the public domain and easily accessible over the Internet. Not only information management professionals can readily review and evaluate the methodology, they can also contribute to the content of MIKE2.0. This makes the methodology collaborative, continuously evolving and ultimately more dynamic and comprehensive than proprietary methodologies developed and maintained by companies and organizations

In the past, one of the challenges for a new user of MIKE2.0 was the abundance of information that MIKE2.0 offers. A demand for a concise book summarizing the key concepts of the methodology, its framework and organization was fairly obvious . The information management community has finally obtained this book!

The book is organized in 8 chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the methodology. Chapter 2 describes the implementation phases. In chapter 3 the solution offerings covered by MIKE2.0 are reviewed at a high level. Chapter 4 focuses on some select solutions that include a number of traditional disciplines like information management and relatively new information development areas such as Big Data. Chapter 5 introduces SAFE architecture (Strategic Architecture for the Federated Enterprise). Some supporting and very useful assets and blogs are presented in chapters 6 and 7. Chapter 8 provides some select case studies that illustrate the methodology in action.

A savvy information management professional can quickly familiarize himself or herself with the methodology framework, activities, deliverables, phases and solutions. Despite its breadth, the book is relatively concise and it is written very well. Some chapters, especially discussions on information development history, will be of interest for a broader audiences including college students.

About the Author
David Johnson earned a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a Bachelor's degree in Psychology (with an emphasis on Learning Theory), from the University of California at Santa Cruz, and a Master's degree in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley. After several years working as an academic counselor at Berkeley, he became a Professor of Mathematics at Diablo Valley College (DVC). He has taught DVC's liberal arts math course regularly for about 25 years, using Mathematics a Practical Odyssey. Other favorite courses include Intermediate Algebra, all three semesters of Calculus, and Differential Equations.

Thomas Mowry earned a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Mathematics from Michigan Technological University, in Houghton, Michigan. He began his college teaching career at City College of San Francisco and then went on to teach at San Francisco State University, Golden Gate University, and Cogswell College. He has been a professor of mathematics at Diablo Valley College, Pleasant Hill, California since 1985, where he has taught the complete gamut of courses from arithmetic to differential equations. He has served as department chair at DVC for the last seven years. Along with co-author, David Johnson, he created a college-level, transferable mathematics course (at DVC ) designed for students in the liberal arts. As no appropriate textbooks were available for this course, he and David created Mathematics: A Practical Odyssey, which was first published in 1992.

Worst math book ever

Having a teacher that loved this book didn't help. It was confusing, very hard to read, the problems were boring, and I found lots of typos and grammatical errors. It was just a very frustrating book to work with for a whole semester. The new edition isn't any better.

He has several hundred scientific publications and patents, and over 30 books, including Principles of Tissue Engineering (1st through 4th Editions), Methods of Tissue Engineering, Principles of Cloning (1st and 2nd Editions), Essentials of Stem Cell Biology (1st and 2nd Editions), XENO, Yearbook of Cell & Tissue Transplantation, One World: The Health & Survival of the Human Species in the 21st Century (as editor, with forewords by C. Everett Koop and former President Jimmy Carter), and Medical Science & the Advancement of World Health. Dr. Lanza received his B.A. and M.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was both a University Scholar and Benjamin Franklin Scholar. He is a former Fulbright Scholar, and studied as a student in the laboratory of Richard Hynes (MIT), Jonas Salk (The Salk Institute), and Nobel laureates Gerald Edelman (Rockefeller University) and Rodney Porter (Oxford University). He also worked closely (and coauthored a series of papers) with the late Harvard psychologist B.F. Skinner and heart transplant pioneer Christiaan Barnard. Dr. Lanza's current area of research focuses on the use of stem cells in regenerative medicine.

Excellent place to start

This book is an excellent place to start if you're interested in stem cells. It covers just about all areas of research and is authoritatively authored by serveral experts in the field. The only caveat is that the field is changing so rapidly that some of the information in the book is a bit outdated (and of course, that's true of just about science text). However, you can quickly supplement the information in this book by getting more current research papers off pubmed or elsewhere. All in all, I think this book does provide an excellent foundation for getting into the field and understanding the basic science and its potential promise.

With his prior collaborative book, "Principles of Tissue Engineering" this text, "Essentials of Stem Cell Biology" provides the essential rationale for that curious endeavor of applied biology we call "healthcare". While others are wringing hands and endlessly belaboring cost-effectiveness, access to care, competitive efficacy and other bureaucratic minutia, Bob Lanza has kept his eyes to the stars. Motivated no doubt by the thrill of discovery which truly historical thinkers enjoy, and others have inspired in Dr. Lanza, mankind surely benefits from the fruits of his labors. The contents, of this book, covering a plethora of topics and concepts, is so well organized that one could read it from beginning to end as a novel or piecemeal as queries demand from an encyclopedia. The limits of this text are merely those of a physical bound book itself. I pray the publishers will expand an online edition that can be edited and updated monthly, for that is the speed at which the future's promises emerge. Robert Lanza is that rare individual that knows a story, knows how to tell it well, and bring to practical fruition all its manifest gifts. In this regard he is a kind of Steve Jobs of biology and applied life sciences.

Yet, Dr. Lanza has not forgotten his clinical roots. While ideal in its concepts, the data in this book are equally practical since they provide intelligible rationales for the kind of innovative clinical procedures that each individual patient expects and prefers. All the Gaussian frequency distributions, categorical mandates and customs of clinical care, will not fill the void that emerges when a patient asks, "Isn't there anything you can do for me as an individual, Doctor? Each compassionate, humanistic and thinking clinician knows that the "average" patient is merely a statistical construct and in the real world one had better have a compelling argument for each individual treatment rendered. This book provides a tissue/cell level rationale for such treatment excellence, not that potpourri, that boiling stew of pseudo cures, commercial nostrums, shifting consensus and folklore that jams the flow of lucid clinical thought. Without the "North Star" of Lanza and his collaborators, the hapless clinician is sadly adrift in the intellectual seas of 21st Century life science.

Worthless

I'm going to cut to the chase for those who know their time is precious.

I scored in the 260s on Step1 and I want >270 on 2CK. I know which resources are time-worthy and which ones aren't. This one wasn't.

Why I bought these flashcards:

I'm currently going through Master the Boards-2CK (MTB-2), and I notice that the text is essentially just a circumlocutory way of teaching the best initial vs diagostic tests. I bought the diagnostic test flashcards because I was expecting there to be a PATHOLOGY/CONDITION on one side and the best initial/diagnostic tests on the other side. This way, when I encounter a disease (e.g. cardiac tamponade), I would know exactly which test is best to initially order followed by which one is most diagnostic/specific. Instead, the cards will list A TEST on one side and then all of the conditions you'd use it for on the other side. For instance, it will list echocardiography on one side and then six different conditions on the other side. This format didn't help me at all. That's let alone the fact that AT LEAST HALF OF THE CARDS are essentially just Step1 material. Now I'm aware that concepts in medicine overlap, but many of the cards would be on things like rheumatoid factor or anti-ACh receptor antibodies - I mean come on, seriously?

I'm generally a slow reader, and it took me a total of probably 5-6 hours to get through all of the flashcards. I felt that I learned very little in the process.

Bottom line:

These cards were designed to be merely lucrative for the publisher and are of mediocre utility for constructive 2CK studying. I would advise investing your time elsewhere.

Great tool

I have all three sets of the cards. I think they are outstanding tool for the review. They have just the right amount of info, are super easy to use even on the go. You can just take a certain part of them and review for example on the train, bus while commuting. They are organized by disciplines so I used them after each reading from the book. I liked them a lot and they helped me a lot thanks to their question and answer format.

I also bought the notecards for Most Likely Diagnosis, Physical Findings, Pharmacology, and Diagnostic Tests. I can only recommend most likely diagnosis. I only used these Diagnostic Tests for the EKG cards. Otherwise, you will be wasting your time.

Global history of Cold War era

This is essentially a history of the Cold War period, i.e. 1945 to the early 1990s. Even so, it does not focus on the U.S. and the Soviet Union, nor great power politics as such. Instead, Vadney broadens the focus and gives due consideration to the Third World which, as he notes, accounts for the vast majority of the world's population (since India and China can be placed in this category). The general emphasis is on major political events and trends, with only some attention given to economic and social factors. Nonetheless, this is still a highly useful book, as Vadney provides essential background and details on a number of events and regions not normally covered in standard "world history" or "Western civ" texts. The book's organization and uncluttered writing style also make it an outstanding reference work for this period.

CHANGES YOUR PERSPECTIVE. Masterful.

I'll keep this short. The book is a terrific overview of what has been happening in our little world since 1945. There is so much here that you will never learn through our media and through other historical text books. Especially given the current world circumstances, it is imperative that Americans learn about histories of other people and how American foreign policy has done some wonderful, and also horrendous, things to other people in the last 50 years. THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR OUTLOOK ON AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY FOREVER.

The Real Deal

Growing up my mother told us stories of a Pinocchio from a different world-- Italy.
Years later it was not surprising to find that Disney who has a habit of taking dark, twisted children’s fairy tales and turning them into sweet happily-ever-afters had sweetened Pinocchio a bit too much! I wanted my children to discover the real Pinochhio, the one written by Carlo Collodi. Pinocchio is Italy’s most famous fairy tale, first published in 1883. Its author, Carlo Collodi, wrote a great deal for children but Pinocchio is the only one of Collodi’s tales to be translated into the English language. Carlo Collodi was born Carlo Lorenzini in Florence, Italy, in 1826. He took the Collodi from his mother’s birthplace. His father was a cook and his mother a domestic servant.
After a spell in the army, he took up journalism as a career and founded a political magazine which was quickly suppressed by the Italian government. He went on to work at other political newspapers as well as working for a censorship organization operating in theater.

And that my friend is the story behind the real "Pinocchio".

I use this book in an Italian-American Children's Program and the kids love it!

I sent the request in on Sunday and would have liked it by Tuesday, but I did not receive the product until Wednesday. Oh well, the product arrived on time (sort of) and in great condition.
