Volume 1 traces the organic growth and development of the composer's style from 1839 to 1851--from Oberto to Rigoletto--and examines each opera in detail, offering a full account of its dramatic and historical origins as well as a brief critical evaluation. More than 350 musical examples make the significance of these early operas to Verdi's developing style especially clear.
In the second volume, Budden covers those operas written during the decadence of the post-Rossini period. During this time Verdi, having exhausted the simple lyricism found in such works as Il Trovatore and La Traviata, found new life as he directly confronted the masters of the Paris opera with his Les V�pres Siciliennes. The new scale and variety of musical thought that can be sensed in the Italian operas which followed is shown here to culminate in La Forza del Destino.
The third and final volume of the study covers the quarter century which saw grand opera on the Parisian model established throughout Italy, and the spread of cosmopolitan influences that convinced many that Italian music was losing its identity. Verdi produced his four last and greatest operas during this time--Don Carlos, Aida, Otello, and Falstaff--operas which helped inaugurate "versimo," in which a new, recognizably Italian idiom was realized.
These three volumes cover every aspect of Verdi's rich and varied operatic achievement. Every lover of opera in particular and music in general will want a set in their library.

The three volumes of studies of Verdi's operas by Julian Budden are rightly classics of the genre. This is owing to their scope of information on the genesis, circumstances, variants, and specifics of the operas themselves--certainly the fullest description these works have ever been given--as well as to the wealth of surrounding information about the composer, his life, his friends, and his times. It is a measure of the excellence of Budden's achievement that this cornucopia of information is surveyed in very readable prose--readers get a picture of each work within its context. Budden's knowledge of 19th-century opera--both in Italy and in France--is wide-ranging, and he is able to place Verdi and his works in comparison with those of Donizetti, Pacini, Mercadante, and Meyerbeer. He discusses how the great operatic genius emerged from the background of early-19th-century opera and how Verdi's own early, uneven works blossomed into the glory of his later ones. Budden, thankfully, is not a hagiographer, and he recognizes Verdi's faults as well as his strengths, but few--if any--writers have managed to demonstrate how Verdi both blended in with his musical surroundings and stood out from them. These studies, with all their richness, are a good source of information about a host of lesser composers of the time. A must for Verdi fans

I finally ordered this book, and I love it. I wish I had got it years ago. Covers the history, the music, and story of each Verdi opera up to Rigoletto. After reading about one of the operas, you will find that you enjoy it more the next time you hear it. If you like Verdi, you should have this book in your library!

indispensable for Verdians; a major and accessible work of scholarship

Like another review here, this one really relates to all three volumes of Budden's traversal of Verdi's operas. I can't think of many books in which works of art (whether literature, painting, drama, or music) are as effectively contextualized as they are here. The context is historical in several senses: it is attentive to the particular political and social circumstances in which Verdi's operas were created, but it's attentive too to the "politics" of the Italian (and at times Parisian) opera world in which Verdi , Donizetti, Bellini, Rossini, and a host of minor figures belonged. We hear about managers, impresarios, singers, opera houses, and of course librettists, and Budden quotes tellingly from Verdi's ample correspondence with all these groups. We get a sense, therefore, of Verdi, not only as composer, but as businessman and collaborator, and we get a sense of his energy and personality and decisiveness. Its an attractive portrait: a touchy, principled, ambitious, and , of course, highly gifted man. But Budden gives us more: the musical context is also made clear in excellent general essays at the beginnings of the first two volumes, before Budden embarks on individual chapters on every opera. In the individual chapters, we get accounts of the genesis of the operas, plenty of information on their sources (often with ample quotation), including descriptions of how the opera plots modify the plots of the originals, and some account of the early reception and early performance history of each opera. Then there's the musical analysis itself, and the text is replete with musical examples. Budden has a fine sense of where Verdi's originality is in evidence, even in the early operas, and while these early operas get extensive treatment in their individual chapters, the "great" operas get correspondingly fuller treatment and analysis. Even if your musical knowledge is limited (as mine is), you will find Budden's three volumes fascinating and instructive -- and, as important as anything, written with clarity, grace, and humor. This is a major work of criticism and scholarship.

A Terrific Achievement

I'm reviewing the first volume, but this is really about all three volumes. After a
general introduction situating Verdi in the Italian opera structure of his time, the
author present a separate chapter on each title, first giving the background of the
project and then analyzing the action scene by scene, with plenty of musical examples.
Instead of following a recording with the libretto, you can follow it using Budden's
precis, for much enlightenment on how Verdi created music drama. It's really an
amazingly detailed excursion. Had you heard about Budden's plans before he actually
started writing, you might guess that no one life is long enough to allow an author to
lay out so much detail, so much thought and insight. There are many great books. But
this one is astonishing.

The Power of Monetary Thinking

In his best selling study, Robert L. Heilbroner calls Economists 'The worldly philosophers'. That description certainly captures what Milton Friedman does in this book - he takes the seemingly simple concept of money, the unit of exchange we use daily and rarely reflect upon, and demonstrates how complicated the issues regarding it are.

(As an interesting aside, Heilbroner's original title for his book was 'the money philosophers' - a definition that fits Friedman in this book even better then his chosen title, even if it is too narrow to account for all of economics).
More then half of this collection of essays is about the so-called 'Crime of 1873' - America's decision, following the issuance of fiat money (that is, money irredeemable in specie) during the Civil War, to peg the dollar not to both silver and gold, but to gold alone. This seemingly arcane and academic topic was a major political issue in the 1880s and 90s, climaxing with the nomination of the silver Democrat, William Jennings Bryan to the presidency of the United States in 1896.
As the Unites States, along with most other 19th century nations such as Germany and France, followed Great Britain in adopting the gold standard, the price of gold rose in terms of other resources, so prices went down. Therefore there was a severe deflation causing much unrest and discontent.
The cure to the deflation came not through political or monetary means, however, but because of an invention of a method to extract gold from low grade ore. This increased the supply of gold, lowered its prices. Hence stopping the deflation, and killing the presidential ambitions of William Jennings Bryan.
The rest of the book describes various issues, from FDR's decision to 'help silver' which helped Communism in China instead (by increasing the cost of silver, overvaluing the Chinese currency and thus hurting Chinese exports and undermining the Chinese economy), to the policy of pegging a currency to the dollar (not a good idea as it subjects the country to the whims of the world economy. The policy was a grave failure to Chile and a great success to Israel, due entirely to external changes in the value of the dollar).
The theme of the later parts of the book is undoubtedly inflation. Friedman demonstrates his claim that inflation is "always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon" (p.104). Inflation is caused by government increasing the money supply, although one time price increases may be caused by unfortunate outside events (like Arabs reduction of the exportation of oil in the early 1979s).
Although Friedman is well known as an economic right winger, there is nothing in this account that should be displeasing to anyone from the left - Friedman's case is against mismanagement, not for small or big governments. Nor is there any argument about whether government spending should go to the military, to welfare, or to any other cause. Although Friedman's book is filled with stories of the political economy, its moral is politically neutral. Indeed, Friedman clearly discusses how inflation is often used by governments because direct taxation is unpopular (p.205) - can you say "read my lips, no new taxes"?
Furthermore, the economic analysis of some reviewers in Amazon is shaky. Friedman writes "all these adjustments [the negative effects of inflation] are set in motion by changes in the rates of monetary growth and inflation. If monetary growth was high but steady... the economy would adjust to it. ... Such an inflation would do no great harm " (p.222).
Although Friedman does not like inflation, he actually makes a case for it, at least at a low single digit level. Since people are usually sellers of few things and purchasers of many, they are more aware of the increase in the price of the commodity they sell then they are of the increase of general prices, especially when those changes are low. People like to see their income go up, as they feel it is a just reward for their efforts (p. 70).
'Money Mischief' is an interesting, challenging book. Its chapters vary from the extremely technical and difficult, (notably chapter 4, a counter-factual exercise estimating the effect of continuing bimetallism after 1873), to 'pop economics' chapters which are no less enlightening and easier to read.
The book ends with a discussion of the new experiment started in the 1970s - currency which is entirely unredeemable by any kind of good. Earlier economists thought that this was impossible, and would necessarily lead to high inflation, but Friedman is optimistic - he believes that aware and well informed public and decision makers can pressure the government against unduly increasing the money supply. Thus, widespread understanding of economics is the real cure for inflation.

Milton Friedman is a great teacher because he has the rare ability to explain complicated subjects in clear understandable language. This book in particular will give the reader insight into the mysterious world of money. At the end you will understand money so well that when you watch CNBC you will start questioning the actions of the Federal Reserve. I highly recommend this book. Also, be sure to youtube and charlierose 'Milton Friendman' for some great videos. We have lost a great human. R.I.P.

The illustrations deal more with the properties of well-grown material than with the effects of specific environmental changes, even though that is where much of the subject's interest lies. However, detailed references to the relevant parts of more com� prehensive works appear throughout, and a later section on 'Inter� relations' adds perspective. Some 'Questions and answers' may also help to show what topics will arise if the subject is pursued further.

Good story but...

The plot is unusual and quite interesting, with elves and demons and gods and demigods. The let down for me, is the two main characters. The blurb led me to believe that one of the MCs is a widely feared bad-ass demon but what I got is a soft spoken emotionless one with a bad rep. Other than that one scene with a hound, there is hardly any on-page display of his much touted power. The other MC is his slave, a wallflower of a character who is boring and uninspiring. It is no wonder then that the sex scenes between these two lacked passion and heat. A shame really, because the story really is good. There is no mention if this book is the start of a series but it had ended with only a HFN.

I didn't think I was going to like this book when I started...Much violence, but once I got into it, couldn't put it down.
A very dark story, very mystical, with demon Gods fighting wars against humans, and the head demon a mix of demon
and elf. If you don't mind the violence, you will enjoy the read.

OK read, could be better (spoilers)

Good writing mechanics. Interesting premise and characters. Sexual elements decent.

Since this is an erotic bdsm fantasy I expect some unreality. That's the nature of this genre. But I do want consistency in characterization and behavior within the parameters the author sets up when a story presents itself as having meaning beyond simple sexual titillation. In this work the MCs have complexity but not consistency. Their words and actions contradict their defined characters constantly. Stupidity arises to advance the action. Insta-growth, Insta-relationship, Insta-plot point.

Especially annoying because most of that could be reconciled by simply having the tale occur over a longer period of time. After a few hundred years or even a few decades it would of been much more realistic for the slave MC to gradually make a connection, the demon MC gradually becoming curious, the father complacent and careless. The story could of lived up to the premise.

IMO of course.

About the Author
Dr. Jason Stephenson's career began in the classroom. After earning his B.A in physics, and shortly thereafter his Masters in Theoretical Probability and Physics, Dr. Stephenson was hired on as an adjunct professor at a local university. Three years later he once again headed back into the classroom as a student to earn his Doctorate in applied physics. His first foray into the writing world was with a local textbook Publishing Company. He was asked to be a contributing author on their most recent installment of the Secondary / Collegiate level physics text book. After completing his portion of the text he ventured out on his own, and wrote various intriguing books based on his theories involving String-Theory, Parallel Dimensions, and Quantum Physics. Dr. Stephenson is currently a tenured collegiate professor and has produced a string of intriguing books based on his theories that have, along with others scientists, re-written how we see theoretical physics and how the universe we live in actually functions.

Worth a look

True it is very brief, but it contains essential information and equations. I wouldn't say it was for beginners; its more for someone who has encountered QM in a few full length books. I got 2 new ideas from it, so it was worth the read. I read it twice and plan to read it again. It seems QM is a subject no one really understands Or if they do, they haven't written a book on it yet. The QM theory is an error anyway. It is a theory and not "Physics" yet. It never will be.

In Sin and Confession in Colonial Peru, Harrison draws directly from confession manuals to demonstrate how sin was newly defined in Quechua lexemes, how the role of women was circumscribed to fit Old World patterns, and how new monetized perspectives on labor and trade were taught to the subjugated indigenous peoples of the Andes by means of the Ten Commandments. Although outwardly confession appears to be an instrument of oppression, the reformer Bartolom� de Las Casas influenced priests working in the Andes; through their agency, confessional practice ultimately became a political weapon to compel Spanish restitution of Incan lands and wealth. Bringing together an unprecedented study (and translation) of Quechua religious texts with an expansive history of Andean and Spanish transculturation, Harrison uses the lens of confession to understand the vast and telling ways in which language changed at the intersection of culture and religion.

Interesting but frustrating

There's a lot of really interesting stuff in here, but it's hard work teasing it out. The book desperately needed an aggressive editor. It is very poorly written/organized. The press also needs to be called out for putting a misleading title on the book. This is more a work of linguistics -- about the words used (in Quechua) to talk about sin and confession -- than it is about the practice of confession. Historians of early modern religion might find it frustrating -- not at all along the lines of recent books by Wietse de Boer, Patrick O'Banion, Anne Thayer, etc.
