Rock writer Eliot ( Phil Ochs: The Death of a Rebel , Watts, 1989) chronicles Springsteen's rise to stardom during the mid-1970s. By effectively patching together lengthy quotes, he outlines the rock star's New Jersey childhood, mentions his first bands, and concentrates on Springsteen's relationship and 1976 split with Appel, who managed the singer/guitarist to his Born To Run (1975) success and whose recollections form the basis of this book. Though overrating the importance of Appel, who is cast as a victim, and unable to interview either Springsteen or current manager Jon Landau, Eliot delivers a readable, sometimes fascinating text that sheds new light on the 1975 selling of Springsteen and should be read together with Dave Marsh's more laudatory biographies, Born To Run ( LJ 11/1/79) and Glory Days (Pantheon, 1987). Recommended to anyone interested in Springsteen, rock 'n' roll, or the music business.

Despite the implicit range of this literary reference, the boundaries of Eliot's own work are much narrower. Forsaking any real examination of Springsteen's work itself, Eliot instead traces the rise and fall of former manager Mike Appel's relationship with Springsteen. Eliot's narration is straightforward and well-executed. He jumps nimbly between protagonists with the simplest changes of inflection and intonation�no small feat considering the large amount of directly quoted material, including a highly effective dramatization of court transcripts. An amazing journey into artist development

Down Thunder Road is presented on the back cover as somehow contreversial and anti-Springsteen. Well, as a Springsteen fan, I did not found this book outrageous at all, but on the contrary fascinating. It is an amazing journey in the development of a new artist that will eventually become a popular music icon. Down Thunder Road is not only the recount of an adventure, it is also a music business case, full with a copy of the contracts, record company memos and court orders. Fascinating !

i liked getting this side of the Bruce story.
It definitely humanizes Mike Appel and he deserved a better shake than he got. but what other outcome can u expect from two hard driving obsessive personalities? ( kinda reminds me of the john huston movie: treasure of the sierra madre). Enjoy!

A must-have book for glider owners

This book is wonderful! I purchased a sugar glider from Pocket Pets (regretably) 5 years ago. I love my glider, but wish I would have had this book beforehand. I would have realized what an awful company that is, and would have looked to get one from a rescue. In every chapter she explains common myths about gliders; everything that Pocket Pets tells customers is false, do NOT get a glider from them. If you have one now, and are still following their guidelines, you MUST get this book! I made a toy for my glider that the author tells you how to make, and she INSTANTLY started playing with it. She has great ideas for diets, cage setups, toys, etc. My only regret is that I didn't get this book sooner.

This book is a must...for potential, new and advanced owners. I am a owner and breeder...I found this book very useful. I will encourage my buyers to buy this book. Im even considering in buying them myself and giving them with their glider purchase.....The more info the better. You can never learn enough. Keeping our gliders healthy, loved and happy is a owners and breeders full time job. We do it gladly.:) Keep up the great job your doing. Belinda

we now have 2 sugargliders and i couldn't have done this without this book, everytime they make a new noise or do something that i am not sure of, i go back to the book i have gone to pet stores but they do not know to much about these animals. this book is the bible for sugargliders

Angel Island is alleghory at its best!

Angel Island is the story of the beginning of a new race. Yet, at the same it, it is the story of men and women as they have always been. Their differences, their struggles, and their tumultuous attraction to each other is beautifully documented in this splendid tale.
Five men stranded on a desert island, realizing they will not be rescued, begin to divest themselves of their social inhibitions and speak honestly about their relationships with women. When they have almost convinced themselves they can survive without them, they start hearing strange noises. The noises turn to visions, and soon the visions turn to reality as five ethereal women with wondrous, colorful wings fly above them in intricate configurations. Day after day the women come, and their flying patterns become more breathtaking with each return.
The men are enchanted by them. Their bird-like language is as mysterious and fascinating as their glorious beauty. Fascination turns to lust and together the men hatch a plan to beguile, lure, and finally possess these angel-like creatures.
What follows is a most unsettling scene, as the men trap, bind, and clip off the women's wings. But it is the integration of the women into the men's society that is the most interesting part of this book. The manner in which the women speak about the men and what they have to say about their race is very telling of the eternal struggle between men and women.
This book was written in 1914 by an intelligent, observant woman, at a time when women had very little freedom. It's contents will always be relevant to women, no matter what cultural background, age group, or social status they may be a part of.

Reprint of "lost" 1914 feminist fantasy adventure novel

This edition is a reprint of an exquisite 1914 feminist fantasy adventure novel, which went out of print without fanfare and then was "rediscovered." It is an allegory about women's freedom and the restraint imposed by heterosexual pair-bonding.
A group of five men are shipwrecked on an uncharted island where they meet five shy but dazzling winged women. While they hammer and build and pass the time Robinson-Crusoe style, the women silently flutter in and out of their days, teasing them with unattainable femininity.
The men devise plans to capture and woo the angel-like women, using "bait" such as mirrors and scarves. Finally they succeed, and in a terrible scene, cut the wings from each woman, forcing them to walk from henceforward.
Lots of dialogue about male-female relationships as the pairing off ensues. The men hold a variety of viewpoints about the proper way to treat women. A final surprise arrives with the new generation. Wings!!

Powerful early 20th century feminist work

This is an intriguing feminist work from the early part of last century, while a little dated, is still very enjoyable. The first part is a bit slow--five men are shipwrecked on a tropical island, and they play talking heads about their situation and their view of women. Finally the plot starts taking shape when they discover that they are being watched by some very unusual creatures. They debate what to do, and make their move about halfway through the book in what has to be one of the more shocking events that I've read in a book in quite a while. From there, the plot gets even more pointed, and it ends on quite a redeeming note. I'm sorry I I can't go into more detail, but you really should read it yourself. Beware the edition that Jill gave me, however; there's an introduction by Ursula LeGuin that gives away some plot bits. I was reading it before the book, but got an intimation that she was talking much more about the plot than I cared to know before reading the book.
