About the Author
Robert Fischer is President of Assets Protection Associates, Inc., a security consulting firm established in 1986. He earned his Ph.D. in education administration from Southern Illinois University in 1981. Dr. Fischer has served as a consultant to many organizations, including publishers, private security firms, retailers, and school districts. Dr. Fischer is a member of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the American Society for industrial Security, The Academy if Security Educators and Trainers, and the International Police Association. He recently retired from his positions as the Director of Illinois Law Enforcement Executive Institute, a project of the Illinois Law Enforcement and Standards Board, and as a professor of law enforcement and justice administration at Western Illinois University.

Edward P. Halibozek is currently a corporate vice president of security for a Fortune 100 company headquartered in Los Angeles, California. He holds a Master of Science in Criminal Justice and an MBA in business. Mr. Halibozek is an experienced lecturer and has written and published many articles, papers, plans, policies and procedures related to corporate security.
Mr. Halibozek is the former Chairperson for the Aerospace Industries Association, Industrial Security Committee and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Chief Special Agents Association in Los Angeles California. Mr. Halibozek served for four years as an Industry member to the National Industrial Security Program Policy Advisory Committee (NISPPAC).

Content is informative but setup of Kindle version is HORRIBLE

I have no issues with the content of this book. That being said, the way the book is formatted for Kindle is AWEFUL. The table of contents takes you to the beginning of the book. You can't search by page number. I really loathe the format.

Most sales people spend 100% of their time focused on "what the customer wants" (in a new home...but it could be in any new product). This is because typical sales people are fixated on the product and believe that's what influences the purchase decision. They unfortunately never consider the real motivating factor in a purchase -- WHY the prospect desires to make a change in the first place and respecting the fact that people don't buy the product...they buy the solution the product delivers! Jeff Shore takes the reader deep into this understanding -- how and why people purchase products and what it takes to create the desire and urgency for the prospect to decide to make a change (to buy!). This book is so powerful because if the sales formula Jeff discusses is applied, the sales path that leads to the close will open up every time. Welcome to Tsipy Ivry's world

The book is deeply influenced by the author's biases. She has unforgivably left out Israeli midwifery, all Israeli religious and ultra religious women who make up 45% of the pregnancies in Israel, Russian and Ethiopian immigrants who make up 10% of the birthing population, and most Arabs who make up 20%. Her conclusions are based on women like her and a total of 100 interviews.

She only makes one reference to midwives when midwives deliver 75% of births in Israel: "Anthropologists also account for more organized and explicit forms of resistance, such as those of midwives in the home-birth movement"

As far as articulating clear ideas this is a typical sentence:
"In environmentalism I attempt to capture the huge range of somatic and emotional responsibilities that the Japanese regime of truth allocates to the pregnant mother while emphasing that primary responsibility for fetal health lies in the bodies of pregnant mothers and that their management of their bodies- which serve as the environment of the fetus- is crucial for the creation of a healthy fetus"

I prefer Barbara Katz Rothman, who is more accurate and more articulate.

Amazing and wonderful!

This book compares the ordinary, medicalized course of pregnancy in Israel and Japan. It is really wondrous to see such fascinating accounts of what two cultures make of pregnancy, ultrasound, amniocentesis, birth and how VERY differently people typically think in each country. She talks of the viewpoints of both ob/gyns and pregnant women and how they tie together.

In Israel, there is a preoccupation with genetic defects and a conception of pregnancy as a big gamble, pressure to have as much pre-natal testing as possible and to abort if abnormalities are found, a lot of emphasis on genetics and little emphasis on environmental conditions in pregnancy. In Japan, there is emphasis on both physical and mental environment for the developing fetus so that obstetricians are very strict about weight gain and nutrition and also give a lot of advice like have a serene life and do not fight with a spouse etc for the good of the child (putting a lot of pressure on the woman for the outcome of the pregnancy). As well, in Japan vaginal exams are regular and frequent and in Israel they are much rarer. In both cases, Ivry is aware of how medicine is something of an instrument of state intrusion into private lives and of social cohesion and coercion. One "modern medicine," but such different ways to integrate it into life.

This is an amazing book and I can't recommend it too highly!

A very clear vision..

I understand this book to be a very clear description of what is missing in the way the international financial organizations address the problems of developing countries. But there is more to say about one of the core problems in our countries and that is the weakness or the lack of institutions and as a result of this ..corruption and worst....impunity. Politicians no matter what party..protect each other. A lot of people's money goes to the pockets of a few ... money that should be spent in education and health. Some of this money comes from the WB , IDB , etc...
Giving it a little more thought..maybe this kind of arrangement is the best situation for these corrupted third world politicians and for the big multinational firms and financial institutions that lend them money...to keep the people in poor countries ignorant and illiterate so that the big firms can keep their advantages with unlimited cheap labor pools. Sure , maybe this situation is viewed as a comparative advantage or just as business strategies by the big firms..but for our own politicians-gangsters ....this is a major crime and should be treated as such...If we just could !!!
Why keep lending money to be used by these thieves?? Well, maybe some goes back to the source...banking accounts in developed nations or comsumption of luxury goods manufactured in the hometown of some of the top brass in some Bank. Who knows?? Believe me.. ,it is not funny to see the son of some new-rich state official driving the last model Lexus SUV with your money!!! Why we the people do not do something about it?? How?? Going to the corrupted legal institutions or to the corrupted police?? Going to the streets and making justice with our own hands and then be accused of terrorists or leftist anti-free market mob and risk an invasion by the US Marine Corps??? Voting??? Give me a break!!! We often see on TV the prez of the USA drinking coffee and chating with some these third world politician-mobsters in his oval office ....Why???
Mr. Stiglitz certainly has clarified and explained the problems we face ...but the solutions are not easy to undertake. There are too many factors involved and the one that could make a difference...to change the mindset of the people...means nothing less than a mental rebirth and a total destruction of all cultural heritage....And this could take centuries....or some sort of dictatorship.... Is there any hope for us???

Fine study of the failure of capitalist economics

Joseph Stiglitz was Chief Economist and Senior Vice President at the World Bank from February 1997 to December 1999. He was dismissed a few months before the end of his contract and replaced by Sir Nicholas Stern.

This is a thought-provoking collection of nine of his most important speeches given between January 1998 and January 2000. They all undermine the conventional wisdom of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the US Treasury Department and HM Treasury.

He exposes the failures of the Washington consensus, of shock therapy in the transition economies, of financial liberalisation, and of the IMF's handling of East Asia's financial crisis. He discusses his vision of development as social transformation; the role of knowledge in markets; the importance of openness, workers' participation in firms, the right to know and economic democracy; and the value of trade unions.

He observes that China accounted for two-thirds of all the growth in low-income countries between 1978 and 1995. In the 1990s, China's GDP almost doubled, while Russia's GDP almost halved and its inequality doubled. In the last few decades, East Asia's states have increased their GDPs and life expectancies, extended education and reduced poverty. In the late 1990s, reckless loans by US, European and Japanese banks caused Korea's crisis. Market entities, not the government, misdirected credit; the government's only failure lay in not regulating the banks.

Stiglitz notes, "If one didn't know better, it might seem as if the fundamental propositions of neoclassical economics were designed to undermine the rights and position of labour." Full employment is more important than welfare, since welfare can never provide the dignity that comes from work.

He points out that recent studies suggest that "increased labour market flexibility could actually exacerbate economic fluctuations." Indeed, "greater wage flexibility ... may actually contribute to an enhanced likelihood of a recession."

He urges preventing crises by controlling capital flows. There is a large literature showing "capital and financial market liberalisation ... unambiguously contributing to economic volatility and an increased probability of financial and currency crises and recessions."
