This has been one of the most interesting and exciting books I have read.

The heroine is so engaging and surprising and the cast of characters around her so unusual. The storyline keeps your imagination in high gear and you just can't wait to see what comes next.

This is truly a story of good against evil. Having said this, the heroine is far from a saint but with all the right intentions in the end.

Anyone who enjoys magic, heroes, villains and the struggle of good against evil will enjoy this book. It was almost impossible to put down any of the 3 books in this series. Can't wait to read the next book in this series, due out sometime this year.

All I have to say is WHY?! I hate cliffhangers and this is one doozy of a cliffhanger. I am literally waiting on tenterhooks.

She's Got the Look and she's got a fabulous new book too

I'll be the first to admit I adore Leslie Kelly's books. All of them. And quite frankly I'm running out of synonyms to express how terrific a writer she truly is.

SHE'S GOT THE LOOK is now my new favorite. It's a laugh out loud funny, sexy as all get out, plus it has a good mystery mixed in, too. It just doesn't get any better than this.

Out with friends one night and slightly drunk, Melody Tanner once made a list of five men she could sleep with no matter what. It was a joke. But now six years and one nasty divorce later, she comes back to Savannahs and finds out two out of the five on her old list are dead.

To make matters even more embarrassing, the number one hunk on her infamous list, Nick Walker, former Marine hero and cover of Time magazine, is the detective sent to question her about it.

I'm putting SHE'S GOT THE LOOK on a list, too. It is immediately going onto my top five best books ever list.

"She's Got the Look" is a great read full of humor and suspense. Melody Tanner is newly divorced and back home. Years ago she and her friends made a "men to do" list back before she was married and Melody thinks it's time to dust the list off, the only problem is that the men on her list keep dying. In comes Nick, number one on Melody's list, but the last one she really wants to "do" because she knows he could break her already broken heart. But Nick isn't budging, especially when it looks like Melody has a stalker. Wonderful journey to love. Read this book!

This was just fun.

This is the first of her books I've read. It won't be the last. I will be looking for the book written before this one, She Drives Me Crazy, as well as anything else out there by Ms Kelly. I enjoyed the people in the book, found the second love story in the book as enjoyable the lead story.

I will be looking for more of her work. Thanks for the fun Ms Kelly.

About the Author
Steven R. Selengut, MBA, RIA, has been in the financial services industry for more than forty years. He started investing while employed in a life insurer's pension investment department. This is the book I should have read first

What I have to say sounds pretty outrageous, but its all completely true with no exaggeration.

* This book turns the risk/reward correlation on its head - higher reward is actually correlated with lower risk with this approach.
* Higher income from bonds than stocks by using leveraged Closed-end funds!
* Trading blue chips stocks to get consistent year after year 20% returns!
* Selecting winning trades in minutes!
* A winner to loser trade ratio exceeding 20 to 1!
* Managing a portfolio with no more stress than balancing a checkbook!
* A system that mananges cash levels automatically!
* An entry/exit system that generates patience and confidence!
* Consistent month after month returns - all positive compounding!
* Positive results in bull, bear, or sideways markets.

Oh, and sucess without constantly monitoring the market outlook. I had to stop watching the Wall street TV shows that I'd become addicted to as they were getting in the way of making money.

The approach requires effort to learn and practice to coordinate the parts (but the author runs online seminars) and it does become second nature.

There are some things Mr Selengut could add to his next edition that are important to a person trying to adopt the system.
* How to transition a large portfolio patiently and prudently.
* A clearer explanation of how to sort out the better "channel trading stocks"
* How to avoid the failures in the rearward looking S&P ranking system.
* A similar mechanical system for selecting and trading CEFs
* A "Test drive" mini portfolio that can be tried using only a couple of CEFs and small number of equities, that can be used to prove the worth of the approach

I looked at the reviews that gave a low rating to this book and, not to criticize, I see that they did not grasp the most fundamental take-away that this book offers. That is the notion that in the increasingly volatile markets, you need to stop trying to control what you cannot and start focusing on what you can control. You control the growing level of income generation and the increasing size of the capital base that generates it. This is against what wall street preaches but it is what actually works in turning your portfolio into an annuity with a predictable high(20%) payout - and with minimal effort and the ability to sleep through anything that the market throws at us.

In the past forty years I went from mutual fund buy and hold, to active trading (now going on 20 years) and after two years with this system, I see that everything I previously learned was pretty much completely the opposite of what I needed to be doing. I was googling for information on closed-end funds when I found this book, and having the experience I had, I was struck by the truth of what the author was saying and decided to get a copy after studying the sample material. It took some months to actually get the system working right and I made a good number of mistakes but I see that they are nothing to panic over. Most of the holdings that are down now will most certainly come back over the next market cycle and I'm getting dividends that are far better than any bond interest. I only wish I had discovered this book sooner.

The best investment book I have read.

I have read my fair share of investment books. Most books contain allot of fluff and stories about things you really just don't care to read. You find yourself skipping paragraph after paragraph to find the information that maybe worth your time.

Mr. Selengut took me by surprise with his book. Every chapter was just fully packed with knowledge and real experience. You can tell this was written by someone who actually invested for a living. It will give you an all new perspective about Wall Street, the crap they sell, and how they are siphoning your hard earned dollars for there self gain.

In my opinion, this book will sink in much better with an experienced investor. I found myself saying "He's right" throughout the book. Mostly because I experienced these lessons first hand. At times I'd have to put the book down and do some research on my own. To truly grasp what the author was talking about. I finished this book with an arsenal of new knowledge and anyone who picks up a copy, will too. The book covers stocks, diffrent types of bonds, closed end funds, mutual funds, money management, asset allocation, profit taking, selection strategies, sector cycles, income, portfolio management, broker services, and Wall Street greed. He doesn't just brush on these topics, he goes into detail about them and how to manage them in a portfolio.

High turnover value investing

Steve Selengut is a RIA whom I became aware of while searching for an investment advisor a few years ago. I am not a client of his, nor acquainted with him. However I follow his investment articles on the internet.

Steve's investment strategy as presented in this book, I would describe as value investing with a high annual turnover as distinguished from buy-and-hold. He shows in this book that with a modest 10% profit target, and trading several times during the year, one can achieve an annual return of over 20%. One does not have to aim for '10 baggers' etc. He teaches investors to view their stock portfolio much as a business views its inventory - to be 'turned over' through sales. Those readers with a finance background may be familiar with the DuPont formula which shows that ROA can be increased by asset turnover. This is the same principle Selengut uses (although he doesn't call it the DuPont principle). It's an insightful approach and for me, is the great lesson of this book.

For risk management, he does not use market timing or stop-loss orders - he believes that by investing only in high S&P rated companies, one can manage losses. How does his strategy perform in bear markets? In Dec of 2010 he stated that his model equities portfolio had just recovered its Sept 2007 high (ie. after three years). Thus although not immune to losses, this portfolio recovered its losses more quickly than a passive index-fund portfolio for the same period. However the high trading frequency with this strategy would also incur higher costs. I wonder how that would affect the net return, compared to a passive strategy.

Prose-wise, the book is rather wordy, and takes effort to get through. It lacks a summary chapter in which the author's investment strategy is outlined in one place. Instead the investment strategy is laid out piecemeal throughout the entire book. You have to do quite a lot of reading to "get it". Nevertheless, this book provides an approach to high-turnover investing that I have never seen explained anywhere else. Of all the books on investing that I have read, this is one of the few that truly challenges index investing.

Oh, Dear Reader, one of our own has fallen. And fallen hard.

Detective Devin Antonio (highlighted in this column last spring and summer!) has been mysteriously suspended.

Apparently (Oh, my, don't you just love that word?) he found himself at the scene of a robbery last night. The suspect was apparently (there it is again) escaping as the detective arrived, so he apparently (oh, joy!) felt the need to not only slap on the handcuffs, but also use his size and prowess to subdue and control the situation.

I'm shocked and downtrodden. I'm horrified and sympathetic. I'm literally unable to get out of bed.

Kidding!

Though, NYPD, I'm, of course, on your side. I stand for truth and justice above all.

Apparently, there are some secrets in the great detective's past he failed to share with those most important in his life. Will this derail his flirtations with a certain travel writer he's been seen around town with? Will this get him (gasp) fired?

As documented in this column, he's helped solve some high-profile crimes over the last several months, including the Jenkins Scandal and the Rutherford Theft. But those triumphs are unlikely to sway the D.A., who's apparently tired of explaining to the attorney general about why corruption is so prevalent on our beloved island of Manhattan.

Maybe a hotel heiress or two will do something more scandalous next week…though I'm not counting on it. (Kidding again! I so am!)

Yet she'd left her best friend's wedding reception early because he hadn't shown up as he'd promised and now she was scooting around Manhattan in a cab, racking up a fare that she was going to need a loan to pay for, simply because she was worried about him.

"You want me to wait again?" the cabbie asked as he pulled up to the police station.

She glanced at the amount, winced, then handed the driver a wad of cash. "No, thanks. I think this is my last stop."

She'd already called Devin's cell phone and sent half a dozen text messages, checked his apartment and phoned Paddy's bar across the street from the precinct house—his usual haunt—all with no results. If he wasn't at work, she was out of ideas.

Wearing a full-length, navy blue taffeta bridesmaid's dress and a sprinkling of white flowers in her hair, she got a number of stares and two whistles before she yanked open the door and strode inside.

"I need to see Detective Antonio, please," she said to the bored-looking clerk, snapping gum as she lorded over the small, dingy waiting room from behind a high, faded-wood counter.

The clerk tapped on her computer, then announced, "Antonio's off duty."

He certainly promised to take the day off, Calla thought peevishly. And if a luxurious and wildly romantic wedding didn't get him to finally make a move on her, she wasn't sure anything would do the trick.

And yet, here she was, making an idiot of herself chasing after him.

"What about Lieutenant Meyer?" she asked the clerk.

This got a reaction. Staring down at Calla, the clerk raised her eyebrows—which were dyed purple. "You got an appointment?"

"No, but he's a good friend." She reached into her bag and pulled out the piece of cake she'd put in a plastic baggie to bring to Devin. "A mutual friend of ours got married tonight, so I brought him some cake."

Along with her proof of friendship, she gave the clerk a broad smile.

In return, she received a narrow-eyed glare.

Having lived in New York for six years, Calla knew she should be used to this kind of suspicious response by now. But she was from Texas, for heaven's sake. Beauty queen smiles and big blond hair were both a birthright and an entree into any event, anytime. She had no idea how to deal with Purple Eyebrow People.

"What color is that?" the clerk asked suddenly.

Calla shifted her gaze to the cake. "My friend Shelby insisted on making her own wedding cake and really wanted the roses to be aqua, but I think they came out icy-green. Still it's—"

"On your head," the clerk clarified.

"Oh. It's a mix of golden-blond with champagne highlights. I had a great girl who did it back in Texas, but it was a challenge to find somebody here who didn't charge three hundred dollars." She leaned closer, so she wouldn't be overheard. A woman's stylist was a private matter, after all. "Eventually, I found this great color specialist named Kirk. He's at Tangles on Bleecker in the West Village. Tell him Calla sent you, and he'll give you a ten-percent discount."

"Cool."

An instant later, the door to Calla's right buzzed as the clerk released the lock leading to the station's inner sanctum.

Connections. This town was all about connections.

With a bit more confidence—something she sorely needed to counteract the prissy flowers in her hair—she walked down the hall toward the squad room where Devin's desk was located. The couple of times she'd been there, she'd noticed his lieutenant's office in the corner. Devin had always spoken pretty highly of his boss, which meant he'd grunted and shrugged when she'd asked what it was like to work for Meyer.

Knocking tentatively on the closed door, she jolted when a deep, authoritative voice called out, "Come in!"

The office was fairly small, containing a wooden desk, a guest chair and a bookcase packed haphazardly with magazines and stacks of papers. A man of about fifty with dark brown hair graying at the temples sat behind the desk. He started to give her an impatient stare, but his expression turned into a charming smile as his gaze raked her body. He rose. "Can I help you?"

At least somebody was happy to see her. "I'm looking for Detective Antonio."

The smile disappeared. "He's not here."

"So they told me out front. I was hoping you'd know where he was. He promised he'd come to my friend's wedding, but he didn't show up. He's not at home, and he won't answer his phone. I'm worried."

"Antonio can take care of himself."

"I'm sure he can. Mind if I sit?" She dropped into the guest chair before he could refuse. "How about some cake?" she asked, holding out the piece she'd shown the reception clerk.

With a sigh, he sat behind his desk and took the cake. "You're his girlfriend?" he asked.

Well, I've been trying… "No, just a friend." Meyer said nothing for several moments. "You have a boyfriend?"

"No."

"I always thought Antonio was a sharp guy." He shrugged. "Truth is, he's been suspended."

Calla felt the blood drain from her face. "Since when?"

"A couple hours ago."

Explaining why he'd bailed on the wedding. But he could have called her. Maybe she and her gang—as he liked to call her and her friends Shelby and Victoria—could help. "For what?"

"I'm sorry, I can't say. It's an internal matter."

"How much trouble is he in?"

"A lot."

"He could lose his job?"

"Definitely."

Though Devin was closemouthed about his feelings, his life, his past, well, pretty much everything, she knew he valued being a cop above everything else. "But he's a great cop."

"I think so."

"Then why—" She stopped as the lieutenant shook his head. He wouldn't budge. "Any idea where I can find him?"

"Try Paddy's."

"Already did."

"O'Leary's Pub, then. Two blocks east."

"Thanks," she said, rising. He flashed a bright smile. "Anytime." Even though she wore four-inch heels, Calla walked to the pub.

Hadn't she strutted across dozens of pageant stages?

Hadn't she paid her way through college with said pageant scholarship winnings and graduated at the top of her journalism class? Hadn't she made a life for herself in the media capital of the world?

So why was her stomach clenched at the thought of seeing Devin? At the confrontation to come?

Gee, Calla, can't imagine why you'd be nervous.

Maybe because she knew he'd been suspended before. A fact he'd told her, almost offhand, though he'd refused to give details.

Being naturally as well as professionally nosy, she'd researched his revelation six months ago. She'd discovered little about the cause for his punishment. Personal reasons relating to an open case was the official line, and Devin, being such an effusive guy—ha, ha—had, naturally, not filled in the blanks. With little to go on, and out of character for her, she'd been intimidated to probe him further about his clearly painful past.

Apparently that day had now come.

She was looking forward to challenging that Irish-and-Italian temper. Ha ha.

She nearly walked by O'Leary's before noticing the ancient-looking oak door. B 'fhearr liom uisce beatha was burned into a plank of wood above the arched entrance. Something Gaelic, she'd imagine.

A Pretty Good Book

I recently started reading Ms. Reid's books. This starts with the bride being jilted just two hours before the ceremony. The bearer of the bad news is the older brother of the bridegroom. To help the girl save face, the older brother proposes himself as a substitute groom. The book is better than it sounds. Of course there is a HEA. Enjoy the book.

Reid has created a hero worth falling in love with and a heroine who is his perfect complement. Shaan is left at the altar by her handsome groom, Piers, who marries another woman. Piers' brooding brother, Rafe, steps in and convinces the devastated bride to marry him instead. Shaan is determined not to see the truth---that Rafe loves her deeply---because she is in a distraught haze over Piers' desertion and over her belief that Rafe is really in love with the woman Piers has married. Rafe uses whatever means necessary---bullying, coddling, spoiling---to restore Shaan's self-esteem and force her out of her despondency. The newspapers add to Shaan's unhappiness by reporting that the wealthy brothers have switched brides, which, coupled with other twists and turns, leads to a final confrontation involving the three major characters. Why did Piers leave? Does he love Shaan? Does Shaan love Rafe or will her heart forever belong to Piers? What is the relationship between Piers' wife and Rafe? What really caused all of these problems to begin with? This book keeps you turning page after page to discover the answers. The plot is delicious, the characters are very well-drawn and the book is incredibly satisfying. I dispose of most Harlequin books right after I read them. This one is a keeper. Buy it!

Strong writing, weak characters - 3.5 stars if I could

Pros:
- The writer is very skillful, and brings the locations (Hong Kong in particular) brilliantly to life and kept me invested enough in the story of two really damaged people to finish the book.
- The best friend character, who is the only sane person in the book, was fun to have around, if only as a novelty. For some reason in this kind of Harlequin novel (older Mediterranean man meets meek, mild virgin) there are almost never any decent parents, siblings or friends around- they tend to be populated by horrible people (my suspicion is that with a solid 60% of the genre having one person with a lick of sense around would make it impossible for the stories to happen as written).
- The setting was really dramatic and intense. I genuinely wanted to know what would happen next- all credit is given to the writer for ensuring that.

Cons:
- The hero's actions are absolutely ridiculous. Him loving her from the beginning is sweet enough (I guess), but bullying a severely traumatized 22-year old into marriage is really heartless, no matter what the circumstances. I think that the setting merited a longer book, one which would have fully fleshed out the consequences of his actions instead of moving directly into the HEA (a la Susan Mallery- she does a GREAT job writing heroes who have to redeem themselves).
- I have to agree with another reviewer, the heroine really is spineless. I know she's traumatized, but to let the brother of the man who you feel ruined and defiled you take your life over makes absolutely no sense. At all. She has no ambitions and is totally content to let pretty much everyone else in the book run her life. She's pretty, but not particularly smart, savvy or in possession of large amounts of common sense. Total doormat.

I enjoyed reading this book, and even re-read it when I was done, so I could see if the ending stood up. It did. Unfortunately the hero and heroine just aren't really up to par- there is no way to cure the massive case of plot-convenient stupidity that the book rests on to keep moving. I'd recommend it if you love this author particularly, but otherwise you are ok taking a pass on this.

detailed into to SPSS 13 for novices, but getting tutorial files requires time

This book is an introduction to SPSS 13 for beginners, which explains how to perform certain common operations step by step through hands-on exercises. The following topics are covered - user interface of SPSS, descriptive statistics (plots, medians, ranges, deviations), probability, inferential statistics, ANOVA, and exploratory factor analysis. Since the book is rather thin (193 pages of text + appendices), it goes through every topic quickly, which may be both good and bad depending on how much you want to learn and how much time you have...

The book is very detailed when it deals with description of the software, but it does require certain basic knowledge of statistics. The author does not even attempt to explain the statistical concepts used in the book. If you do not know what all these words mean, you are out of luck. I, for instance, know some basics and made it through the first half of the book in one day, but was totally lost when I got to chapter 10 where two-tailed tests, null hypotheses, etc., were introduced

What I found frustrating is that getting tutorial files requires a lot of work. About a third of them can be downloaded from Springer's web site in one package. The rest has to be downloaded individually, each file from its own web site, using URLs from the Appendix A. Many of them open as ASCII text in your web browser, after which you have to copy the data, paste into a text file, save it, then import in SPSS... Was it so difficult to combine them all in one convenient package, or use the same data file over and over again? I also suspect that some of the data which come from the web sites of scientific journals may require paid subscription, either individual or through the company/university, to access the files.

I actually read half of the book, skipping the examples which were not included into the Springer package, before I realized that instructions where to find them were in the Appendix A. The author did not care to expain in the beginning that this is where one should look for instructions where to find them. Very frustrating. To make things worse, some of the files (such as war.sav) are neither included in Springer package, nor there is a link to them in the Appendix A.

The good part is that each chapter ends with 4-5 simple exercises based on what was discussed in the text.

Summary: acceptable book for a beginner with some background in statistics, works well for a quick introduction, contains many hands-on exercises which are well described (but getting tutorial files from the web one at a time requires work). Since it covers only the basics, only selected options and capabilities of the SPSS package are presented. Not surprisingly, it does not contain enough reference information to substitute the manual.

Good book BUT...

This is a great book. This is not a repertory book but a reference book. I found every variation I was interested to learn. I would say that this book is for people +1900 and for seasoned Caro Kann players. This is not a good book for starting to play the Caro.

There is something I did not like about this book... it is very hard to follow the variations. You have to be patient to find your way thru pages and lots of variations and sub variations.

If you already play the Caro, you are +1900 and have a lot of time to follow thru hundreds of variations then this is the book for you.

If you want to learn to play the Caro and want to learn the structure and plans look somewhere else.

For decades, A. Karpov has been the world leading expert and supporter (both in theoretical discusion and practical results) of this very solid defence. This book is focused in the sharp advance and gambit lines (ECO B10-B12) and accomplishes the task of pointing out the best continuations and ideas for both sides in a wonderful way. Either you like to defend the resourceful positions arising from this defence or to crack it, this book will help you to choose the best way to do it. The variations follow a prelation order helping the reader to identify them from bad or dubious to recommended ones.

Overall, an excellent book which surpasses the good old work from V. Kotronias on the same subject.

Advance Variation and Gambit System

I just recieved this book in the mail and wanted to throw out a quick review of the publishing job and some of the content. I really think this is how an opening book should be made. Very easy to read and follow, multiple indices, an average of about 2 diagrams per page for 260 pages. The prose is conversational and direct. This book looks to be an excellent resourse for both black and white players who want to enter these variations. About 230 of the 260 pages cover the Advance system. I eagerly await the next volume, and I don't even currently use the C-K defense. This looks to be one of the best opening books I've seen. Very clean, professional. Buy it if you are at all interested in the Caro-Kann.
