A Black Man in the White House: Barack Obama and the Triggering of America's Racial-Aversion Crisis, by Cornell Belcher

America's racial fault lines run uninterrupted from the days of slavery to those of lynchings, separate water fountains, and the contemporary Jim Crow of voter suppression, gerrymandered voting districts, and the attempt to nullify the presidency of America's first Black chief executive.

In this book Cornell Belcher presents stunning new research that illuminates just how deep and jagged these racial fault lines continue to be. Cornell has surveyed battleground voters from 2008 through the 2016 primary season, tracking racial aversion and its impact over the course of the Obama presidency. Given the heightened racial aversion as a consequence of the first non-white male living in the White House, the rise of Trump was a predictable backlash. The election of the nation's first Black president does not mean that we live in a post-racial society; it means that we are now at a critical historical tipping point demographically and culturally in America and this tipping point is indeed the wolf at the door for many anxious white Americans.

The panicked response of the waning white majority to what they perceive as the catastrophe of a Black president can be heard in every cry to take back our country. This panic has resulted in the elevation of an overt and unapologetic racist as the nominee of one of America's major political parties.

Let's be clear, as Belcher points out: there isn't any going back. America's changing population and the continued globalization of our marketplaces won't allow it. In order to compete and win the future, America must let go of the historic tribal pecking order and a system gamed to favor the old ruling white elite.

To paraphrase DuBois, 'The problem of the twenty-first century remains the color line.'

A profound introduction
By Jeremy Cole
This, for me at least, was a profound introduction to racial politics in the US. It is well written and well worth reading, if entirely depressing. As a generally racially-neutral white male, but one raised in and near the South, I've "known" about some of this, but never fully grasped or understood it. Now I need to come to terms with what I can personally do about it to help.

Required reading
By Dianne T.
For those who still don't quite understand why we're not yet a "post-racial" America, Cornell Belcher has deftly traversed the historically devastating subtleties of institutional and political racism by artfully highlighting conscious strategies perpetrated on a less-than-conscious population--he brings the background to foreground in a poignant and accessible sweep of history. A great voice and communicator no matter what your level of understanding.

A well-written, data-fileld rant
By George Phillies
As Cornelius Belcher actually says in his book, this is a data-filled rant. There is a lot of interesting data. It is a well-written rant. The author is firmly convinced that Republican dislike for President Obama primarily arose from Obama's race. Other issues, such as coal mining, compulsory purchase of health insurance, the duration of the recovery from the Great Recession, and the continuation of the Bush war policies, are taken to be lesser issues. The volume would usefully be read by conservatives and Republicans, if only to get across how completely non-communicating liberals and conservatives are becoming in this country, to the point that I expect by and by we will experience partition on the Czechoslovakian model. For better or worse, many conservative readers will be too busy thinking that the author is wrong to realize that they are reading what the author believes to be right, thereby failing to notice that the author and fellow progressives are going to act based on what they believe to be right.

The volume was completed a bit too early to be able to speak in detail to the megacity vs. everything else divide, as examined notably by Sean Trende. Perhaps the author will give us another book. Readers might usefully also compare this volume with with Murray's Coming Apart (which speaks only about White Americans). The author is occasionally imprecise in his language. For example, the observation that Blacks outvoted Whites in 2012 is a reference to the percentage turnout, not the number of votes, from Blacks and from Whites.
