Story Is Dead, Long Live Story

As far as I'm concerned, storytelling in music is about over. Yes, it still pops up every now and then in some country songs or your latest folk hit, but overall, songwriters are moving away from telling fully fleshed-out stories through their songs.

This in turn means one very important aspect of songwriting just falls by the wayside: dramaturgy. What storytelling did for centuries (going all the way back to bards) is provide a reason for listening to the whole song: If you wanna know what happens to Georgie, you have to keep listening. Every songwriter knows: Give the audience a good story and they'll stick around.

Now look at the following songs:

• Sam Smith - Stay With Me,
• Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl,
• Rihanna - Umbrella,
• Jennifer Lopez - Booty,
• Beyonc� Knowles - Drunk In Love (feat. Jay-Z)

This book from Friedemann Findeisen is great for songwriters and mixers who want to reflect on their tracks and mixing, with the song of keeping the interest of the listener throughout the entire song. It has a substantial number of practical tips and ideas about how to hook listeners from start to finish and illustrates that with a huge amount of references to specific sections of well-known hit songs. I feel it gives the reader new ideas and food for thought on things to try in writing, recording and mixing pop songs. Besides going into detail on the tension curve of the overall musical arrangement of a song the book contains chapters about how the separate instruments (like drums, guitar, bass and vocals) can be used effectively in creating more tension and excitement in the music. It also has a chapter about the do and dont's of writing lyrics, which I thought was very good.

If you are interested in writing and composing songs - which you can stand behind - look no further. This is a book for songwriting in the 21st century. Things come together, there will be many 'aha!' lightbulb moments, whether 'so *that's* what I did right!' or 'so *that's* what I was doing wrong this whole time!' This is an instructional course, and Findeisen is an excellent guide. He regularly makes and uploads videos on songwriting, I'm in the middle of a 40 minute interview he does with a Scandinavian songwriter at the moment. The author was even kind enough to accept my friend request on social media, and my confidence in my own music is getting ever closer to where I want it to be. Get it, you won't be disappointed. -Tom L

The best sales book ever written

I had the great pleasure of hearing Peter speak in 2000 and he had a massive impact on my insurance sales and business.He would have to be the most passionate sales person I have ever seen. I purchased several of his books to give to colleagues and clients as well, and they were just as impressed as me. The best autobiography I have read to date

I was so impressed with this book (I finished it in three days) that I felt I had to source Mr Rosengard's email address to congratulate him. As a review, I am publishing my response below.

Dear Mr Rosengard,

You invited my work colleague to breakfast with yourself last Tuesday and he spoke so highly of his encounter that I decided to purchase your book from Amazon.

When it arrived last Thursday I thought I would take it down to Battersea Park at 18:00 and read the first bit in the sun for half an hour to see if I thought I would enjoy it. I next looked up due to noticing a drop in the ambient temperature and a darkening of the sky. It was 21:30! I’d been absolutely gripped by your book, so much so I’d finished it by Saturday morning (it was perfect company for a two hour train-ride to Birmingham!).

I just wanted to write to you to both thank and congratulate you on not only a wonderful book, but a wonderful life. Your book has reminded me that talking to strangers isn’t the crazy taboo that corporate London has made it (I’m from a village originally where talking to strangers is not only welcomed but expected!) – I’m saddened to realise that I’ve lost the want to talk to strangers but your book has inspired me to rekindle that love of it.

Your book struck the perfect balance of making me laugh, reflect and imagine all whilst being constantly amazed at the things you have managed to achieve just by making connections with others. An immedite classic - and a first time for everything...

I have never written a book review before. But then the unique genius of Peter Rosengard is that I had also never bought life insurance before - until having met him. So now I'm considerably wealthier dead, as well as if I contract a critical illness - and I have also had the joy of reading probably the funniest book since Howard Jacobson's Kalooki Nights. It is not only 'unputdownable', but is more importantly beautifully self-aware, painfully revealing and ridiculously funny. And it is quite simply, brilliantly written. A wonderful irony is that the book celebrates a life focussed on selling wealth upon death, but yet through telling the most wonderful stories of a really action-packed existence, inspires the reader to live a truly full and rich life..

Good stories, truly enlightening, but needs some editing

I read "I Walked to Zion" with a lot of enthusiasm. The book contains many accounts written by young people in their own words. The reader gains a good understanding of what the trek from Illinois to Utah must have been like for children and young adults. Of course youth like to keep their accounts short so most details are missing. Especially missing are the hardships of the menfolk who did most of the physical labor of the trek.

Still the reader comes away with an appreciation for the difficulties of the children, and their victories as well. Many of these young folk carried siblings on their backs, cared for the cattle, walked in snow until they were numb, and some of them died of cholera, exposure and starvation.

As a Mormon living in modern times, it brought home to me a stark recognition of what my ancestors endured just to be with the saints who believed as they did. Living one's religion in peace was a luxury not afforded to the early saints, and this book takes a hard look at how that affected the youth of the church. Uprooted from their homes in England, Sweden, and other European countries, these children suffered weeks in the dark holds of ships. They emerged in America only to have to travel across its plains, a trek of nearly 1,200 miles, on foot in fair and foul weather. Many of them lost their parents, and gave up everything they had to be with the saints in Zion. I shall always be grateful for their sacrifices.

If there is one complaint I had with the book it is that it is very chopped-up. After each individual's story, there is a list of references. While I agree that references are critical, they should have been placed at the back of each book, with an indication of which stories drew from them. In this way, the book would have better continuity.

Still, I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone.

Though the traditional Japanese diet is often much healthier than Westerners', writer and author Barber (The Japanese Kitchen, Japanese Pure and Simple) says the real secret is how the meals are consumed. Chopsticks, she says, have a twofold benefit: forcing diners to pay attention to their food, and slowing down the eating process so that, ultimately, fewer calories are consumed. Even if would-be dieters opt for a fork and spoon, those with a taste for Japanese food will find plenty of healthy options. Breakfast selections include traditional porridge and smoothies that rely on tofu rather than yogurt for creaminess. Domburi, essentially a rice bowl with various toppings, and noodle-based dishes dominate lunch options. Barber keeps her dishes visually appealing as well, adding a burst of color and flavor by sprinkling ruby red pomegranate seeds on her Daikon, Edamame and Avocado Salad with Yuzu Viniagrette, and her Lump Crabmeat and Pomegranate Sushi; her sushi recipes, what Westerners would call deconstructed, make preparation pressure-free by simply assembling the rice, nori and fillings (smoked salmon, marinated tuna) in a bowl. An impressive array of flavorful soups (including a miso-inspired riff on gazpacho) round out the well-considered meal plan.

There is only one simple way to lose weight--eat less. We all know this already, so why do we find it difficult to put into practice or to maintain it for a long time? It is because many diet methods involve radical changes to what you can eat and often refer to pre-calculated calories and tables of indices. The Chopsticks Diet is straightforward: there are no calorie counts and no tables, but it's full of easy, delicious, and healthy Japanese-inspired recipes to eat with chopsticks.

The essence of The Chopsticks Diet lies in the Japanese way of food--what they eat and how they eat--exemplified in chopsticks. And since Japanese food is to be eaten with chopsticks nearly all recipes in this book are designed for eating in this way. Many research findings suggest that eating with chopsticks slows people down and therefore they eat less. Try eating the same amount of food with chopsticks as you would with a knife and fork and you will quickly realize that it is almost impossible. If you eat fast, as most of us do nowadays, your brain cannot accurately monitor the amount of food your stomach is receiving. So it is difficult to know when to stop, and therefore we end up eating more than we need. Slow eating is good for you, especially if you want to lose weight.

An interesting book; with recipes that are easy to follow, interesting in taste, sufficient in size, and diverse enough to keep the meals surprising.

I like the book because the recipes let me try different tastes without overwhelming me; enough recipes can be made with very few 'exotic' additions to the pantry; the recipes are calculated for two people instead of the usual 4 people; tips for storing or re-using leftover are included, and everything I tried tastes good.

And I lost some weight.

I think I love this book.

Picturebooks explained

More things happen in picture books than meets the eye. The placement on the page, use of whitespace, and picture colorings have more to do with what the child perceives than we realize. Stereotypes and fears can be learned through the pictures. Excellent book for educators wanting to know more about the power of imagery and how imagery influences what children learn about their world.

This is a colourful, good quality book suitable for the complete beginner. It contains a range of well known and original tunes in a variety of styles. The music is clearly printed with amusing cartoons throughout, making it very attractive to pupils ... Pupils will find this book fun and interesting to use and I shall definitely be using it in the future. About the Author
Kathy Blackwell, B. Mus. (Hons.), LTCL, LGSM, studied music at Edinburgh University and continued with post-graduate studies in music at the University of Oxford. Kathy is a string teacher with many years experience of teaching violin and viola. She developed her teaching ideas at the coalface in both Music Services and in private practice, working with groups large and small and in one-to-one lessons. She was a strings consultant for the ABRSM Music Medals initiative, a new assessment specifically designed for students taught in groups, and a contributor to the accompanying book All together! Teaching Music in Groups (ABRSM, 2004). Her teaching experience has led her to co-author Fiddle, Viola, and Cello Time, published by Oxford University Press, with her husband, David. Kathy and David have presented workshops in the UK, Australia, Hong Kong, and Singapore. David Blackwell studied music at Edinburgh University, after which he pursued a career in music publishing, first at ABRSM and then at Oxford University Press. He is co-editor of OUP's In the Mood: 17 Jazz Classics for Choirs and Carols for Choirs 5, and has published a number of single choral arrangements. He is co-writer with his wife Kathy of OUP's award-winning string series, Fiddle, Viola, Cello Time, and String Time, which have twice won the MIA award for Best Educational Publication. He now works as a freelance music editor, composer and arranger.

Excellent book!!

I just used this book for the first time tonight and I LOVE IT!!! I'm a 30-something year old, and just picked up a violin a few weeks ago. I've been trying to take lessons on YouTube... there are some great videos there to get you started, but I felt like I needed some books. I sounded bad before, but when you play with the CD it sounds pretty darn decent. Much better than screeching along like a dying cat with no accompaniment. LOL! I'll be buying more of the Fiddle Time books for sure. :)

New and Improved Edition

As I said about the first edition, my students who have used this book when they start lessons readily learn to read music. Just don't write the fingering in the book. They will pick it up quickly because of how the tunes are written. The only difference I've noticed in this book is that the duets that the student plays with the teacher have been printed so that the student's part is on the top line. The kids love the funny pictures and the tunes. You can't go wrong with this book.

Best Sight Reading Book!

I've been teaching violin for over 15 years and this is the absolute best book to use when helping students learn to read notes. The pacing and organization of the material is perfect. The tunes are interesting and fun. The illustrations and CD are appealing to students. My students usually take between 1-2 years to complete the book as we are using it as a supplement to their Suzuki Book 1 or 2. Great for all ages but particularly good for ages 6-10. By the time they have completed the book, my students are all reading notes with confidence on all four strings.
