How Sondheim Found His Sound, by Steve Swayne

"The research is voluminous, as is the artistry and perceptiveness. Swayne has lived richly within the world of Sondheim's music."
---Richard Crawford, author of America's Musical Life: A History

"Sondheim's career and music have never been so skillfully dissected, examined, and put in context. With its focus on his work as composer, this book is surprising and welcome."
---Theodore S. Chapin, President and Executive Director, The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization

"What a fascinating book, full of insights large and small. An impressive analysis and summary of Sondheim's many sources of inspiration. All fans of the composer and lovers of Broadway in general will treasure and frequently refer to Swayne's work."
---Tom Riis, Joseph Negler Professor of Musicology and Director of the American Music Research Center, University of Colorado

Stephen Sondheim has made it clear that he considers himself a "playwright in song." How he arrived at this unique appellation is the subject of How Sondheim Found His Sound---an absorbing study of the multitudinous influences on Sondheim's work.

Taking Sondheim's own comments and music as a starting point, author Steve Swayne offers a biography of the artist's style, pulling aside the curtain on Sondheim's creative universe to reveal the many influences---from classical music to theater to film---that have established Sondheim as one of the greatest dramatic composers of the twentieth century.

Sondheim has spoken often and freely about the music, theater, and films he likes, and on occasion has made explicit references to how past works crop up in his own work. He has also freely acknowledged his eclecticism, seeing in it neither a curse nor a blessing but a fact of his creative life.

Among the many forces influencing his work, Sondheim has readily pointed to a wide field: classical music from 1850 to 1950; the songs of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood; the theatrical innovations of Oscar Hammerstein II and his collaborators; the cinematic elements found in certain film schools; and the melodramatic style of particular plays and films. Ultimately, Sondheim found his sound by amalgamating these seemingly disparate components into his unique patois.

How Sondheim Found His Sound is the first book to provide an overview of his style and one of only a few to account for these various components, how they appear in Sondheim's work, and how they affect his musical and dramatic choices.

From Publishers Weekly
There have been so many books written about Stephen Sondheim and his revolutionary scores that it's hard to believe anything's left to analyze. But Swayne has found a new angle, and in this scholarly tome, he examines the impact other artists and mediums have had on Sondheim's work. The Dartmouth music professor offers some fascinating and fresh insights into possible inspirations behind characters and musical moments in shows including Follies, A Little Night Music, Sunday in the Park with George and Passion, citing classical and Broadway composers Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin and Arlen, as well as dramatists like Sondheim mentor Oscar Hammerstein and, most intriguingly, French new wave filmmaker Alain Resnais. The author probes Sondheim's past and excavates his classical record collection, student papers and musical compositions, early musicals written at Williams College and even all the college plays he took part in. Amid the trove of details, Swayne doesn't always successfully connect the presumed influence to something in Sondheim's oeuvre. That he owned a lot of records by certain classical composers, for example, doesn't necessarily mean that every composer greatly shaped his work. Additionally, the author offers lengthy dissections of the songs "What Can You Lose?" from the movie Dick Tracy and "Putting It Together" from Sunday that will best be appreciated by music scholars. Sondheim enthusiasts who are not musically inclined will most enjoy the chapters on his film and theater influences.

Good but not Great
By W. White
This book got off to a good start, analyzing Sondheim's favorite classical composers and how they show up in his own musical language. The next chapter is devoted to Sondheim's broadway influences, and gives a good examination of these as well.

The second half of the book is devoted to Sondheim's theatrical and cinematic influences. It is here that Swayne goes off track. Though he makes some interesting connections between film technique and musical composition, it seems to me that this is where his thesis falls short, and could have been developed much more cogently. Also, one would think that Swayne would devote more attention to actual film scores.

My main complaint is that in a book called "How Sondheim Found His Sound", one would expect to find at least a mention of the orchestration in Sondheim's shows. Perhaps this is just my own personal bent, as I have always wondered just how Sondheim works with his orchestrators and to what extent he thinks in orchestral terms.

In terms of the writing, this book (especially in the later chapters) all too often reads like an undergraduate music paper. All this being said, there's enough in here to warrant purchase by real Sondheim junkies.

Fascinating Look at the Creative Process
By John Matlock
Sir Isaac Newton once said: 'If I have accomplished anything, it is because I stood on the shoulders of giants.' Stephen Sondheim would probably say something similar.

He has acknowledged being influenced by classical music, Broadway, Tin Pan Alley, Hollywood and many more. In the end though, Sondheim's work has taken these together and produced something uniquely his own. The results speak for themselves: West Side Story, Gypsy, Sunday in the Park with George, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, Do I Hear a Waltz and the list goes on and on. In 2004 alone there was the first Broadway production of Assassins, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (London), The Frogs (Lincoln Center), Passion, Pacific Overtures.

This book though, is not a description of what he has done, it's an in depth analysis of the way his music came about. The author teaches music at Dartmouth. His analysis, aided by Sondheim himself talks not only about the origins of music, but the way Sondheim goes about developing a song. It's a fascinating look at the creative process.

Great primer on Sondheim
By Erica Ford
This is a great book on how Sondheim "found his sound." I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Sondheim's card system and it gave me greater insight into a person who knew Leonard Bernstein.

A good solid book on English grammar
By Amazon Customer
Straight to the point, practical, and plenty of exercises. However, some concepts havent explored in great details (for eg. the (subtle) difference between "think of" and "think about" aren't mentioned). But overall a pretty good solid book!

Pretty good
By James Murphy
I picked this one because it seemed to offer what other ESL books I have used in teaching did. It is adequate, but not really as good. It's progression is awkward to me. There are a lot of good things about it, the lessons are adequate for their purpose, but the way it advances leaves me wishing it was building more on the past lesson rather than feeling we were starting out on a completely new tack.

A twentieth-anniversary reprint of the landmark book that launched the current explosion of social-scientific studies in the biblical field. It sets forth a cultural-material methodology for reconstructing the origins of ancient Israel and offers the hypothesis that Israel emerged as an indigenous social revolutionary peasant movement. In a new preface, written for this edition, Gottwald takes account of the 'sea change' in biblical studies since 1979 as he reviews the impact of his work on church and academy, assesses its merits and limitations, indicates his present thinking on the subject, and points toward future directions in the social-critical study of ancient Israel and the Hebrew Bible.

More and Better Than Expected!
By @joemcfddn
The C. S. Lewis book titled “The Weight of Glory” is actually a collection of essays or lectures made by Lewis. The title of the book comes from the first of these lectures and is also the most quoted of them. Since this book is a compilation, I provide below a brief overview of each essay below.

The Weight of Glory 6/8/1941 – In this address, Lewis first talks about the longings we each have: the deep longing for something which no experience on earth satisfies though we have faint glimpses of, like a memory of something long ago. It’s the desire that beauty stirs within us, the longing to be fully immersed and joined into the beauty. It’s what others have described as the God shaped void within us. Lewis argues that this longing proves that there must be a world where this longing can be fulfilled and that we are made for that world.

Lewis takes some time to discuss the idea of rewards received for work. First, there are rewards which are not directly connected to the work, such as being paid to clean for example. Then there are rewards which are clearly organically tied to the effort to obtain them, such as a good marriage is the reward for loving one’s spouse. Lewis points out that while the former can be accused of only doing the work for the reward, this makes no sense to say in the latter case. Lewis also notes that some rewards, while organically tied to the effort taken to obtain them, aren’t recognized as desirable until one has obtained them or is at least closer to that goal. Lewis uses the example that one wouldn’t know they enjoy Greek poetry until after they had gone through the work of learning Greek.

Lewis believes that heaven is like this. I think he conceived of everything in heaven as being of a higher order than things of this world. Thus he talks about how we improperly long for worldly things, which are really a false substitute for the heavenly things we ought to long for.

Lewis spends most of the remainder of the lecture talking about glory. He thinks that while seeking fame on earth may be conceited, desiring to please God is not. This is the first sense of glory. The second is in how we will “shine” as God’s masterpieces. Lewis considers this idea that God can take delight in us to be something so amazing that we can barely believe it—the “weight or burden of glory”.

Finally, Lewis discusses how we ought to keep other’s glory in mind when considering those around us and how this ought to keep us humble.

Learning in War-Time 10/22/1939 – Lewis addresses how study can seem to be a trivial pursuit during war time. His argument is primarily that we must engage in normal human activity whatever the circumstances are. And there is always some crisis or matter which may seem more important. For example, the matter of heaven and hell is always present and more significant than war. Study is a necessary undertaking to which some have been called and which they should work at despite distraction, frustration and fear.

Why I’m not a Pacifist 1940 – Lewis first lays a foundation from which he will build the rest of his arguments. The foundation consists of Lewis’ view of the conscious as having two parts: a drive to do what is right and beliefs about what right and wrong are. Lewis next explains his concept of reason by which he will address the latter portion of the conscious. A reasonable argument, says Lewis, consists of facts, “intuition”, and a series of linked, logical propositions. What Lewis means by intuition is that which can’t be argued but with which virtually everyone agrees, such as love is good and hate is bad. (Lewis believes that people “must be trained in obedience to the moral intuitions…”, an idea he also addresses in The Abolition of Man.) Authority is also an important consideration in deciding a matter, both because we don’t have time to examine every belief and because our beliefs are liable to be corrupted.

After all this groundwork, Lewis finally begins making his case. First, he considers the fact of whether or not all wars do more harm than good, concluding that “history is full of useful wars as well as of useless wars.” He next examines whether the intuition of love as better than hate (or helping as better than harming) leads to pacifism or not. First, he recognizes that we are incapable of helping everyone so that to help one means not helping another. He then states that if two parties are in conflict, for an observing party to do nothing would violate the intuition. (He assumes that action would come in the form of physical intervention and violence.) From here says, “The question is whether war is the greatest evil in the world…”. This shows that he thinks of pacifism as the view that war should never be engaged in. And the only reason he could see to take this position would be if it could be argued that war is always worse than the alternative. After this, he argues that pacifism is impractical, because pacifists will be overcome by those who are not.

Turning next to authority, Lewis argues that human authority, both specific (England at that time) and general (“righteous war” praised throughout history) support war.

Examining at last divine authority, Lewis argues that current Christian authority and Christian history both support violence. The only verse which Lewis apparently can think of which might support pacifism is Matthew 5:39, “Do not resist an evil person”. Lewis believes Jesus here is addressing personal revenge and considers Paul and Peter’s talk about government using the sword as support for Christians using the sword. Lastly Lewis considers his bias and argues that since it would be more convenient to be a pacifist, it is more likely for one to be biased towards it. In other words, not finding a logical reason to be pacifist nor authoritative support, Lewis concludes that people must be pacifist because it is easier and more convenient for them to do so.1

Transposition 5/28/1944 – Essentially, as I understand it, Lewis is addressing the argument that since alleged supernatural works of the Holy Spirit manifest as naturally explainable phenomenon, isn’t it more reasonable to believe all such instances are simply natural, not supernatural? Lewis’ argument is that the “higher” spiritual must be transposed into the “lower” natural world and must therefore use otherwise natural means to do so. He uses the metaphor of how we attempt to represent three-dimensional reality in two-dimensional drawings.

Is Theology Poetry? 11/6/1944 – Lewis addresses the question of if our beliefs about God (and even in the existence of God) are merely fanciful and quaint ideas we hold sentimentally but without any true reality behind them.

The Inner Ring 12/14/1944 – Lewis speaks about the desire to be “in” and accepted along with the fear of being left out and rejected. He warns against the danger of doing wrong in order to fit in as well as the fleeting nature of the sense of being “in”.

Membership 2/10/1945 – Lewis refutes the idea of Christianity as a private, individual, personal matter alone. He takes some time to differentiate between groups whose members are different but complementary (metaphor of church as a body) and mere collections of like people or things. Lewis also touches on hierarchy and authority. Overall, Lewis basically argues against isolated individualism on one hand and homogeneous collectivism on the other.

On Forgiveness 8/28/1947 – Lewis talks about God’s forgiveness of our sins. He explores the difference between excusing (I understand, no big deal, etc.) and true forgiveness as well as how this relates to forgiving others.

A Slip of the Tongue 1/29/1956 – Lewis warns against the temptation to “play” at Christianity which comes from the desire to hold onto the things of the world. Refusing to let go of these things causes one to not get too spiritual to the point which would require real change in their life.

Critical Analysis Book Review

The Weight of Glory by C.S. Lewis

C.S. Lewis writes with a very intriguing and interesting style, especially in one of his great books titled The Weight of Glory. He is a very logical writer that is able to tie in emotions to keep the reader engaged and be able to relate to the topics. The book is organized in different sections with different topics. The title of this work refers to the connection to Christianity in all of his topics. C.S. Lewis is a strong Christian that directs his writing at other Christians and non-Christians; he makes the reader think about how he/she can change for the better for whatever topic is being discussed. The arguments in this piece are set up from a logical standpoint therefore, the reader will find a lot of strong warrants for each claim that Lewis states. The topics that Lewis will be discussed from Lewis’s piece include: “On Forgiveness,” “Learning in War Time,” “The Inner Ring,” and “Membership.”
The overall background of the writings includes resolving common issues in the context of Christianity. The first topic that Lewis discusses is forgiveness. An example of how he relates the topic of forgiveness to Christianity is how many Christians will ask God to excuse them instead of confessing their full sin and truly believe in God’s forgiveness. Lewis (2001) makes this claim and then backs it up with evidence immediately by writing, “If you had a perfect excuse, you would not need forgiveness; if the whole of your action needs forgiveness, then there was no excuse for it” (p. 179). This is very logical support from Lewis and it is shown by his “if, then” statements.
Another topic that Lewis brings up is titled, “Learning in War Time.” This reading describes the everyday war that Christians endure. It really struck me when Lewis said he believes that all humans are called to be righteous in the duties we participate in within this war. He then continues from a logical standpoint by saying that every duty is a religious duty, thus it is absolute that it’s our obligation perform every duty in the name of God. This statement caught my attention because it teaches me that I can do every duty I am called to do in my life to the glory of God. The way that Lewis warrants this statement comes from a very emotional standpoint, which gives the reader a strong example to test their morality in a certain situation. Lewis (2001) attacks the reader’s emotions when he writes, “Thus we may have a duty to rescue a drowning man and, perhaps, if we live on a dangerous coast, to learn lifesaving so as to be ready for any drowning man when he turns up” (p.53). Not only was I able to relate to this example, but it definitely tested my morality. Before Lewis even said in the next sentence, “It may be our duty to lose our own lives in saving him,” I already thought to myself that I would be willing to die for another person through my own moral/emotional mindset. As mentioned, I was also to be able to relate to the situation. For example, I have taken a few CPR and childhood safety classes because my mom runs a daycare; therefore, I always have to be ready to act if any of the children ever had any health implications.
“The Inner Ring” dilemma is another topic that Lewis presents. Logic is, once again, used by Lewis in the strongest way in explaining this concept and relating it to Christianity. The inner ring represents an individual always wanting to be involved in something for the lone reason of just wanting to be “in.” Unless we can find virtue, happiness, loyalty, and kindness in the things we’re involved in, we will always feel excluded and we will always be looking for more. This is exactly what Lewis explains before he boldly states his two reasons behind this dilemma. The first reason he stated was that passion for the ring is the most skillful thing in causing a good man to do bad things. In his second reason, he said that until one conquers the fear of being an outsider, an outsider that individual will remain. He even makes a clear comparison to the reader for better understanding, which is something Lewis is very effective at. He is the type of author that can make the topic easily relate to the reader, which helps with better understanding for the reader.
The last topic that Lewis discusses is the issue on “Membership.” This is another case of Lewis showing his strength in logic by making a statement and then supporting it with two bold reasons. There were two reasons behind why he stated for religion to be solitude is dangerous. He then proceeded with his logical reasoning by quoting the modern world, “You may be religious when you are alone, and I will see to it that you are never alone” (p.160). Of course, he explains in detail what this means by saying it is basically banishing all of Christianity to believe in this statement. Supporting the claim with a second warrant, he says, “There is the danger that real Christians who know that Christianity is not a solitary affair may react against that error by simply transporting into our spiritual life that same collectivism which has already conquered our secular life” (p.160). When Lewis clearly states a few reasons a claim is true, it shows how sharp his logical reasoning is.
As mentioned before, the book appealed to me in an extremely logical way. Lewis also incorporates an emotional effect on the reader in a few different topic areas. The writing was very easy for me to understand and relate to, which makes the reading much more intriguing. Even though I am the type of audience that Lewis is mainly targeting (Christians), I do believe that non-Christians would also be blown away by Lewis’s powerful writing style. The book, The Weight of Glory, showed the importance of recognizing certain topics/issues present in our world today and being able to relate them to Christianity to understand how we can make a difference for the better in the glory of God.

Excellent Answers for Questioning Students
By Jennifer Sandberg
I would definitely recommend The Weight of Glory to any Christian with questions about living a life of faith. Lewis especially targets the college student population with his great understanding and use of logical arguments. He deals with practical concerns and pragmatic solutions. He serves the truth of the Bible with the hope found in God. In this book, Lewis attempts to address common issues young Christians struggle with as they try to own their faith in a post-World War culture. For example, in the chapter “Learning in Wartime,” he says, “If we let ourselves, we shall always be waiting for some distraction or other to end before we can really get down to our work.” Procrastination: every college student has experienced it, and Lewis responds to it. He demonstrates an understanding off the issues, along with the feelings and emotions young people would have concerning them. He’s thorough in his logic and has obviously thought things through. In The Weight of Glory, he begins by emotionally tugging on the reader, then hits him with a sound argument, and leaves him with practical advice on how to continue living as an enlightened Christian. He brings himself on the same level as his readers; he doesn’t leave them with the lofty opinions of a scholar, but with the guidelines of one experienced Christian to a younger. In his explanations and arguments, Lewis uses a lot of analogies. This is extremely helpful as he tries to explain himself and illustrate his point, however, he sometimes takes the analogies too far. He overuses some analogies and stretches them too far. This book has made my faith stronger and inspired me to live a more thoughtful life as a Christian. I want to read more of Lewis’ works and delve more deeply into his doctrine.

Chapter 1

GETTING LOVE RIGHT

According to ancient Greek mythology, human beings were originally created with both sexes, male and female, combined in one person. They were whole and complete within themselves and lived in a fulfilled state of perfect union.

Then, as human beings have a tendency to do, they angered the gods. The gods punished humanity by cutting each person in half. One half became male and the other half became female. Then the gods cursed human beings for the rest of their existence to try and become whole again by reassembling themselves.

On a fundamental level, relationships represent a search for that wholeness, a search for completeness and the ability to feel as one with another human being. In many ways, this striving for unity with another person is a fool's game. Ultimately, it is impossible to merge and stay merged with another human being. At best, we can find moments of completion, moments of closeness and oneness. But then what happens? We always come back to the reality that we are two separate individuals.

Yet, like all myths, there is a measure of truth to this one, too. When we get love fight, two individuals become us, an entity that makes the two of us together stronger than we ever could be alone. The me and the you still remain as separate entities, however, in conjunction with us.

So the question becomes, How can we come together and build a relationship that creates this better us? How do we go about developing relationships that can meet our needs for wholeness and fulfillment? It is not simple, but it can be done. We can learn to share our life with another person in a way that enhances rather than diminishes who we are.

This book will demonstrate the step-by-step process involved in building and maintaining a healthy relationship. It will enable you to understand the origins of your relationship patterns, show you how to analyze them, and identify alternative behaviors so you can replace dysfunctional patterns with healthy patterns.

If you are single, Getting Love Right will help you learn how to develop into the kind of person who is capable of a healthy relationship; how to select an appropriate partner who can meet your needs; and how to guide your relationship through different levels and stages.

If you are currently in a relationship, Getting Love Right will teach you how to transform that relationship. It will provide information and assessment tools that will enable you to evaluate your present relationship and identify areas for growth. It will give you the techniques to problem-solve in a productive way and undertake a fundamental relationship renegotiation with your partner.

DECIDING ON HEALTHY LOVE

Many people experience problems in relationships because they hold mistaken beliefs about the fundamental nature of love. We have been taught since childhood to believe that love is a mysterious phenomenon beyond our control. Just look at the way we talk about it. We "fall" in love, sometimes "head over heels." We say she "stole his heart," or "she lost her heart" to him. Cupid shoots his arrow and we are powerless to resist. These myths tell us that love comes into our lives suddenly through little or no choice of our own. No wonder we are confused about how to achieve a lasting, fulfilling relationship.

Healthy love is not an accident. Nor is it a temporary feeling that comes and goes. Love is a decision we make based on essential choices about ourselves, our partner, and our relationship. While healthy love is often profound and passionate, we can build it into our lives step by step, one choice at a time.

To get love right, therefore, we need to revise our concept of love as some romanticized ideal and understand a relationship for what it is: an agreement between two people to meet each other's needs and to have their own needs met in return.

There are three common relationship errors:

1. Expecting too much from a relationship

2. Expecting too little from a relationship

3. Expecting a relationship to remain unchanged

Some people expect too much from a relationship. They hold onto the belief that the right partner or the right relationship can magically fix them and free them from taking responsibility for their lives. They expect a partner to have the ability to make them feel better on demand. As a result, they are constantly disappointed. They experience cycles of intense highs, when the relationship seems to be going well, and intense lows, when it fails to meet their unrealistic expectations.

Other people expect too little from a relationship. They are so sure they can never feel whole and complete with another human being that they never give themselves the chance to have their needs for love and intimacy met. They equate intimacy with pain and do everything they can to insulate and protect themselves from it. They do not know that there are two kinds of pain: pathological pain that comes from dysfunctional, unsafe relationships and the healthy pain of growth in normal intimate relationships.

Still others may have found a satisfying relationship, but then make the mistake of expecting it to stay the same year after year. They don't realize that relationships are not a one-time event but an ongoing process. As time goes on, both partners need to continue to talk and problem-solve together, and, when necessary, renegotiate the terms of the relationship so that it stays current with their needs.

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS: PASSION AND SAFETY

Healthy relationships meet our needs for both passion and safety. Dysfunctional relationships, by contrast, represent extremes in which only one or the other exists. People who expect too much from relationships seek passion. Unfortunately, they almost always give up safety in the process and end up being hurt. People who expect too little from relationships choose safety over passion. They often lose the chance to have their needs for intimacy and passion met.

Healthy partners know that passion and safety can coexist in healthy relationships because these relationships are rational, flexible, and safe.

Healthy relationships are rational because you choose them. You choose the type of relationship you're ready for. Then you choose to become a person capable of being in a healthy relationship. You select your partner on the basis of a variety of characteristics and choose the rate at which the relationship develops. Ultimately, you and your partner choose whether to continue the relationship or to end it.

Built in this way, a relationship becomes a series of choices, all of which have logical consequences. If you choose as a partner someone who is incapable of meeting your needs, the logical consequence is that your partner and the relationship will not give you what you want. If you choose a dangerous partner, you can expect to have a dangerous relationship. If you choose a healthy, compatible partner who is capable and willing to meet your needs, it is logical to expect that you will have a compatible relationship in which your needs are met.

Healthy relationships are also flexible. They operate on a variety of levels, depending upon the needs of the partners. Sometimes they may be very exciting and intense. Other times they will be very relaxed and comfortable, even boring. Such relationships allow each partner to be flexible: You can be together as a couple or alone as individuals, according to the situation and your preference. You are not forced to be strong all the time; you are not forbidden to be strong. The flow of give and take enables you to be both strong and weak, to be yourself. This flexibility means you can be accepted as a fallible person who will make mistakes and who, in turn, is willing to accept the mistakes of your partner.

Finally, healthy relationships are safe. No matter how committed you are to the relationship, no matter how much you love your partner, you do not abandon who you are and your partner does not abandon who he/she is. You don't lose yourself in your partner or in the relationship. To stay in the relationship, you may make compromises if necessary, but not at the expense of your own safety or well-being. Healthy partners do not tolerate abuse and will do whatever is necessary for their own safety, even at the expense of the relationship.

Many people prize spontaneity in their relationships. They fear that by becoming conscious of the choices they make, going through a rational decision-making process, they will lose the spontaneity and passion that make love exciting. Fortunately, that is not true. Choosing safety and making sound choices allow you even greater freedom in your relationships. Once you know your partner is safe, you are free to give in to your passion and spontaneous desires. When you are able to communicate openly and honestly about who you are without fear of guilt or retribution, you don't have to hide from your partner or pretend to be something you are not. You are free to be yourself and know deep down that your partner will love and accept you.

BECOMING A CHOICE MAKER

Once you understand what healthy relationships are, you can work to create them in your life by becoming a choice maker. If you come from a dysfunctional family, you may have been taught that choices are all or nothing, yes or no, black or white. As a result, you may not have learned basic decision-making skills, which include thinking through a number of options and selecting the best one on the basis of what you want. You may find it useful to think of decision making as a three-step process, outlined by the following questions.

1. What choices do I have? First, you need to identify your options and the likely consequences of each choice. This will help you see that, in most cases, your choices are not black and white but include a range of options. In examining the likely consequences of a particular option, you may discover that what feels good now may not, in the long run, be in your best interest.

2. What do I need/want? You need to know yourself well enough to assess your particular needs and wants. This includes knowing what you're thinking, what you're feeling, and what is motivating you to think, feel, and act that way.

3. Which option is best for me right now? On the basis of your answers to the first two questions, you can select the option that promises to best meet your unique needs and wants at the present time, with the realization that these needs and wants may change over time.

The more you practice this three-step process, the more experience you will gain as a choice maker. The more you apply it to your relationship choices, the better your chances to get love fight.

As you consider the options available to you, keep in mind the following:

Most choices are not perfect. We can rarely get 100 percent of what we want. Many times we are afraid to make a decision because we fear making the wrong choice or having to give up one thing for another. It is important to remember that choices typically involve a trade-off. All we can do is strive to make the best choice among the options we have, based on what we know or believe to be true.

Mistakes are unavoidable. As fallible human beings, we can't always choose the best option. Once you accept the fact that you will make mistakes, you can choose to learn from them to make better and better decisions in the future.

Choices are not forever. Choice making is an ongoing process. The best option one day may be very different the next. We change, and our needs and wants change, too. We need to be prepared to reevalute and, when necessary, renegotiate and alter our decisions.

If you have had relationship problems in the past, healthy change is possible. It may be, however, that before you can begin to make healthy choices, you need to alter some fundamental aspects of the way in which you go about your relationships. Change is not easy, especially when it requires us to alter deeply ingrained patterns learned in childhood from our parents.

This book is designed to help you make those changes by giving you the tools you need to alter the way you conduct your relationships and to become a person capable of healthy love. The chapters in this book are designed to give you the concepts and models you need to answer the question, "What are my choices?"

In understanding what this book can do to help you get love right, it is important to discuss what it will not do. This book will not teach you how to have a perfect relationship. It will not teach you how to find Mr. or Ms. Right who is going to magically fix you and make all your pain and problems go away. It is not going to teach you how to transform your present relationship into some romanticized soap-opera ideal of love -- because ideal love does not exist. This book is not going to give you an effective relationship overnight -- because healthy love is achieved by slow stages.

Another thing this book will not do is to save you from the responsibility of thinking for yourself or making up your own mind. You need to decide what kind of relationship you should have to be happy. There are many choices available. All this book can do is to show you the skills involved in becoming a healthy choice maker and point out some of the options available, along with the logical consequences that some of those options may have.

This book will not teach you how to have a problem-free relationship, because relationships have problems. Partners are fallible human beings, and, no matter how much they love one another, they will encounter problems. What this book can do is to demonstrate concrete skills so that you can effectively practice problem solving with your partner.

Finally, this book will not save you from the pain of loving another human being. Being in love means you're going to be hurt. If you don't want to get bruised, you don't want to play football; if you don't want to fall down, you don't want to ski. The same is true for relationships: If you don't want to get emotionally hurt, you don't want to be in love. Why? Because you're going to love another fallible human being who is going to make mistakes, who is going to have faults, and who is going to inadvertently hurt you. You, too, are a fallible human being and you're going to make mistakes. You are going to do things that hurt your partner, even if you don't want or mean to.

What this book can do is to show you how to build a relationship in which pain and disappointment are the exception, not the rule. It can show you how you can build relationships in which support, love, and mutual respect are the everyday reality, not just the dream.

Healthy relationships are possible. Through knowing the processes and steps involved in relationship building, learning to make choices, solving problems with your partner, you can replace painful, dysfunctional relationships with healthy relationships in which both passion and safety coexist. You can learn how to get love right.

Know a good relationship when you see one.
By alice savage, M.S.
This realistic look at any relationship is a must for everyone. As a counselor I use it as a tool for groups, and individual counselor. However, the content applies to anyone in, or begining a relationship on any level. I have bought several copies for friends and family, and probably will buy more. I recommend it highly for parents to share with their children as a guideline for revealing the components of a good or bad relationship. Not just for those who have an addiction. Easy read, profound content.

A work book not a read book.
By Amazon Customer
Terry Gorski is an indisputable authority on human relationship training! Getting love right is a work book to help those who find themselves wanting the best for themselves, their partners and their future together or apart really! So if you want an easy read to get a degree in loving right this probably isn't the book for you. But if you're looking to change, grow and work towards satisfaction and autonomy, I say give this book, a go.

Good materials to evaluate where you've been
By S. Sue
A very heavy chapter about whether you are in compulsive, apathetic, or healthy relationship.. Totally brutal truth. Tricky thing is to have balanced actions, feeling and thinking from the beginning. Too many are in trouble six seven years down the road, realizing the conflicting personalities. I dont think people would change dramatically, it is few critical things rhat were missed by both couple.

Shades of Green, by Reggie Chandra

Drivers today are abundantly aware of the time consuming inconvenience caused by excessive red lights. More than a mere nuisance, traffic signals drastically impact the environment and our safety on the road. Poorly timed traffic signals account for wasted time and fuel, the production of harmful emissions, and the increased likelihood of otherwise avoidable vehicular collisions. As pervasive as these problems are, the reason behind the frequent stops that cause them remains a mystery to many motorists.

In Shades of Green, Traffic engineer and CEO of Rhythm Engineering, Dr. Reggie Chandra, reveals the truth behind common myths about red lights and lays out a "crash course" in traffic signal operations. This book not only demonstrates how traffic signals work, but also provides a compelling solution to traffic troubles through signal coordination. Shades of Green presents the benefits of signal synchronization through an in-depth look at the InSync adaptive traffic control system and its results in the field.

Shades of Green explains how signal optimization can save lives as well as time and fuel. In it, Dr. Chandra provides an accessible introduction to the enormous potential of traffic signal technology. Written for policy makers and concerned citizens, this book uncovers the often overlooked effects of traffic signals and equips readers to seek solutions to issues of safety, sustainability, and roadway efficiency through signal optimization.

Useful Book
By Patrice
Before reading _Shades of Green_, I had no idea what an impact traffic signals have on communities and the environment. This book explains how traffic signals work and the problems they create when they're not running at their best. The language isn't too technical and the book is full of anecdotes and surprising figures about just how detrimental or beneficial traffic signals can be to a community. I would recommend this book to any of my loved ones commuting daily or to the public officials in my town who can improve our traffic signals. I want to keep family safe and save some gas money along the way!

Shades of Green - A must read
By Angalena
Shades of Green is a wonderful read. From the very first page you are drawn in to find out more about how traffic signals work. Traffic signals are something we all come in contact with every day, and yet we don't think about them at all; except to obey them. Shades of Green is a wonderful glimpse behind the scenes of the traffic industry, and is easy to follow and enjoy. Chandra did a great job with this one.

Shades of Great!
By Alvin H
This book isn't so much about how traffic signals work but about the toll they take when they don't. I found it an easy read and to the point. It really opened my eyes about the environmental and financial costs of traffic signals, not to mention the safety aspect. I would not have thought traffic signals would use such dated technology as some of them do. Now I know why I wait at red lights so long every day!

Also, I had no problems with the Kindle format.
